Desktop Linux reports that earlier reports of Nigeria buying 1 million of the laptops or $1 million worth of computers are incorrect. No one has bought anything yet, especially since there is nothing to buy yet.

DesktopLink did drop a order bomb though:

OLPC program director for Middle East and Africa Khaled Hassounah confirmed to DesktopLinux.com July 31 that Nigeria has indeed committed to buy 1 million machines, and then revealed that Brazil, Argentina, and Thailand also have placed similar commitments.
Whoa! Now that's a big-ass bombshell. Four million units?! Last week OLPC was reeling from the India snub and this week they're sitting pretty - only one more 1 million order and OLPC can start cranking out its $100 $130 hand crank foot pedal sting-powered laptops.

And we're talking a serious slap too. Two-thirds of silicon.com's 12-strong CIO Jury IT user panel says OLPC is "fundamentally flawed". Ouch!

The group pointed out two major issues I've asked about before. Nick Clark, director of IT services at Tower Hamlets College, went for connectivty

"A wind-up laptop may keep going but what is it going to be used for without the communications infrastructure? It may be better to invest in that infrastructure and provide a cheap mobile phone with browser to access it. But then there's the question of who will pay for the calls."
And folks like Chris Broad, head of IS&T, UK Atomic Energy Authority asked about in-country implementation:
Giving equipment or even building a school does not contribute to educating the children unless the trained teachers and infrastructure is also there.
And then there is the imperism angle, which may have been an influence on India's Education Secretary Sudeep Banerjee calling the One Laptop Per Child idea "pedagogically suspect." Funny enough, it was the British, specifically Russell Altendorff, IT director at the London Business School, whipping out "imperialism."
: "Professor Negroponte and the US in general must realise that many countries will treat their largesse as imperialism by another means. They mean well but they really have to respect the capabilities of other countries to make their own way. More realistic trade agreements would be a better way of helping the third world."
Hmm, Kettle, it's Pot, we gotta talk.

Google Summer of Code is paying off for OLPC. Manu Cornet, one of the lucky Google students, developed an OLPC dual-mode display simulator using Xephyr. We'll let Manu explain it:
This "gtk-theme-torturer" is an application to detect performance issues in GTK themes/engines. It does two things:
  • For each of the most common widget types (very easy to add some more), it packs an instance of it in a container, and resizes/redraws it many, many times. You can set a "pain level" to determine the number of times widgets will get redrawn while scaling.
  • It takes each one of the gtk_paint_* functions (implemented by the engines themselves) and tries all possible parameters configurations, including unusual values to see if the engine crashes.
The program also outputs detailed time measures

Ooo, its looks like the OLPC laptop's Linux BIOS will be able to boot via external disk, over WiFi, from external flash, or internal flash. Check out those cool icons! I only wish my Windows machine could have such a cool start up screen.

OLPC is asking for content, three tier's worth! SJ Klein is drafting “request for content” (RFC) to be revealed shortly for a that three-tiered repository of content distributed with Laptop.

Did you think that the One Laptop Per Child would sell laptops at the fanciful 100 dollars a pop? Might you not add that 1,000,000 multiplier, the minimum unit order, to get a $100 million total for a million laptops? Did you know the price is now $140 per, give or take?

ZDNet UK reports that MIT Media Lab Asia was such an unmitigated disaster it made
Nicholas Negroponte, MIT Media Lab founder and lead wolf on OPLC, persona non grata within the subcontinent - and guarantee the rejection of any project with his name attached.
And apparently MIT Media Lab Europe was not much better.

That Quanta President Michael Wang says Ouanta will start production in the first quarter of next year lends credibility to rumors that the OLPC laptop is facing production delays and contradicts China Wall's announcement that it will be making the OLPC's in Shanghai.

How hard it must be for big Chinese companies to get respect aborad. While Great Wall PC is a leader in China, they are negotiating to build the OLPC laptops for between 180 to 200 yuan (around $20), a money-losing price, just to get brand recognition.

The OLPC folks have finally settled on a way to power the OLPC laptop. They're going to use a hand crank foot pedal string. That's right, string. You pull it out of a generator, like a lawnmower starter of old, that sets an internal charger spinning.

In a move that pretty much guarantees that OLPC laptops will ship with a text-only Wikipendia pre-installed, Samuel (SJ) Klein joined OLPC as Manager of Content. He's a veteran of Wikipedia, starting both its newsletter and translator networks, he's also worked with Global Voices. Expect to see a lot more emphasis on collaborative publishing
