OLPC Learning Club May Meetup this Saturday

At a time when Nicholas Negroponte could use Iron Man (or even Fusion Man) to help get XO laptops to the children of the world, the OLPC community has its own summer blockbusters to consider with the departure of Walter Bender and the new alliance with Microsoft. Plus yesterday OLPC announced their plans for the XO-2 laptop, and the fact that G1G1 is set to make a comeback in late summer.

XOs and children

So to help us with some perspective, we are pleased to have two special guests in this weekend: Mel Chua, grassroots organizer from OLPC Headquarters, and Aaron Kaplan of OLPC Austria. We return to our gracious host Kevin Cole at Gallaudet University where the March meetup also took place.

What: Family XO Mesh Meetup
When: Saturday, May 24th, 2008, 10 am to 1pm
Where: Gallaudet University [map], Student Union Building, Lower Level [floorplan], Flexible Room L040 and L041, Washington, D.C. 20002

The free raffle will include the first XO-friendly third-party AC adapter (soon to be piloted by OLE Nepal), an XOView Viewfinder and one of Mike Lee's “naked” car power adapters.

As always, kids of all ages are welcome.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Considering that the vast majority of readers of this website dont live anywhere near Washington is there anything remotely useful about this post?

Will any part of the meetup be recorded for the benefit of us non-US readers?

Perhaps Mel and Aaron could be video interviewed?

Hello!

Lighten up!

Tourists pass thru DC, even if they don't live in town. I was at a DC Meet & we had 40+ people back in December, including the past & present editors of this website. Two were visiting from Austria and Nepal, plus others were with the project for almost 4 years.

Although the Philly group is not so close by, it has many less members present at its meeting. OK, 8, 2, & 6 were there when I made it. So, it makes for a good visit, even from NYC!

Any Philly members want to car pool down? Beats a bus or train when we split the cost of fuel.

I'll try and make it on Saturday... should be fun.

Robert - we hear you man. If you're looking for some more international-friendly grassroots events, check out http://www.olpcgrasscon.com/ . The event will be televised online and interactive (and recorded for future viewings). Hope to see you there.

I swear you are now scheduling these when I'm definitely unavailable! I'll be on a flight to the west coast for the duration, or I'd join virtually via the DC jabber server. :(

...next time, I hope??

Jon, we might just have to do a meetup in a bar inbetween the May and June meetups... :-)

Robert, we make every effort to capture video at our meetings and will very likely do interviews this Saturday. There are already many videos on our club blog at http://www.olpclearningclub.org.
