OLPC + Wikipedia

With an announcement by Jimmy Wales at Wikimania that should surprise no one who knew that Samuel Klein joined OLPC, OLPC will be shipping their $100 $140 dollar laptops with a text version of the Wikipedia.

Andy Carvin has more info on Jimmy Wales speech, but its Taran Rampersad who reads between the lines of the announcement. To quote his observation:

if the Wikipedia is to be distributed with the 'OLPC', then it means that the OLPC folks are tacitly saying that the systems are not expected to connect to the internet. This means that as soon as the Wikipedia gets in the hands of the children - it's outdated.
And outdated information was a specific problem OLPC was to solve with local mesh networks connected to long-range WiFi.
