I'm also from Alberta (near Edmonton), and also eagerly anticipating the shipping of my XO.

Ordered one back on day 2 or 3; got it in Orleans (Ottawa) last evening - Fedex out of Mississauga. The driver got me to sign, but there was no additional charge. Note though that Fedex has sent me a bill for past shipments, after they were delivered. Usually it's been for sales taxes and a broker fee for items from the USA. It appears that OLPC were shipped in to Canada direct from the manufacturer.

Up and running in about ten minutes. Had a little trouble connecting to my household wireless with WEP until I read some online help. I now have SimCity and Doom on it, along with Flash instead of gnash (my wife is a Webkinz addict). Youtube videos are a bit jumpy, and I haven't succeeded in getting all the way through the Webkinz login process yet. I got about 4.5 hours out of the first battery charge.

I bought a second one Dec 31; no sign of it yet.

Hi CREWCAB110,

I also live in Ste-Foy, but ordered on 31 Dec.

Can I ask when you ordered? I'm kinda hoping to get ours later this coming week.

Hello, fellow Canadians!

My lime-green XO laptop is operating among the vineyards of the Niagara Peninsula, in Vineland, Ontario.  I can see Toronto smog from across the Lake.

My impression is that few of this little machines will stay in the hands of kids with short attention spans - the XO requires patient experimentation - which only brings joy to geekie adults.

My claim to fame is to introduce the XO Laptop to an 85 yeard old Senior, disabled by a stroke and wheelchair-bound.  I have set up a Meraki wifi mesh to share my DSL feed with my neighbour 4 houses away. My XO Laptop arrived in mid-January and we have been conducting trials to see if it could assist him in his home. Wifi connectivity works great once I removed the splash page.

The small-size keyboard and screen is not really an issue. Perhaps the contrast of symbols against backgrounds could be improved. He finds that his poor motion control makes it difficult to get the cursor arrow in the right spot. Too many drop-down mini-menus and disappearing black frame. I'm working on some solutions found on XO forums for eliminating the frame appearance/disappearance and using the key control instead. A USB mouse is essential.
So far he has figured out the Internet browsing, photos via Record and Googling for information. We're working on the Gmail module.

Even though it is designed for easy learning, the XO Laptop software is not intuitive and needs to be taught. The OpenSource community will have to improve the software and fix the bugs and missing features. But at least one Senior is delighted with his new toy.

Yesterday he claimed that the mental exercise of learning the XO laptop has improved his damaged mind. He can now walk more steps under better balance than before. He is struggling to get out of his wheel chair and the XO laptop has given him hope and connectivity.

Great to hear dbirk! One of the problems I've had wit my newly-arrived XO is that I can't find someone that will use it! It's nice having people coo and whistle at the machine, but I'd love to get someone to work with it actively and find it useful. Helping someone with psychomotor disabilities regain their sense of agency is a wonderful idea - I'm sure that they appreciate it. Keep this thread updated if you don't mind - I'd like to hear more about how the situation progresses.

Out of curiousity, how does this person deal with the tiny screen? I'd love to give this to my grandmother, but her eyesight is quite poor - and the tiny lettering would be indiscernible to her.
