DOOM on the XO?

Over a year ago a video was put out http://www.0xdeadbeef.com/weblog/?p=248 showing the original DOOM running on the XO. Anyone know how that might work? As soon as they start showing up in Northern California I'll try to figure it out myself, but I'd rather not start from scratch since it's obviously been done already.

Heh, I remember that video, too.  I imagine if you can get ahold of a Linux executable and the game data files, you might be able to run it from the XO's terminal a la Firefox.  God knows I'm no Linux wizard, so I may very well be totally wrong.

Actually, being predominately a Mac user, I really want to see Marathon ported over more  Grin .  That, and a decent z-code interpreter to play my collection of text adventure games (Zork on an XO  Cool !).

We need to do something about this dearth of "grown-up" games, frankly.  I realize that isn't the primary focus of the machine, but let's be honest here, most of these purchased G1G1 laptops are going to be played with by adults as much (if not more) than children, and I can only play SimCity so much, y'know?   Wink

I'd just like to mention that it pleases me to no end that I've just discovered a fellow Marathon veteran.   Grin

You can always play Zork via the website version Smiley

I'm interested in the gaming angle of the XO but I think I'm too spoiled by my desktop machine.

*high five* Hey, we're not alone here after all!

In all seriousness though, since Doom and Marathon both have Linux ports, does anyone know how doable bringing these to the XO would be?  I would be perfectly fine with a command line-based executable, as long as I could still play 'em.

True, but it's just not the same  Smiley

Heck, I've got emulators galore on my Palm Zire for Infocom games, Lucas Arts games, even old Nintendo titles.  Considering that the XO hardware is easily hardy enough to handle these things, it would be nice to see them appear here, too.

I guess I'm just going to have to knuckle under and learn Linux game programming  Tongue.

Marathon and Doom on the XO?! That would be so much fun... we need to get that running if at all possible... (which is probably a no for the time being...)

LOL.

Somebody said the magic word.

DOOM!

You know someone will make it happen.

Although... I am more interested in porting this other game for OLPC...  Stay tuned!

Yah-- I really hope that someone posts an easy tutorial for taking a linux program (or linux source?) and compiling it for the XO and installing it as an activity... that would mean that suddenly there were a billion potential programs for the XO.

Tops on my list would be Nintendo/Super Nintendo emulators and a CBR (comic book reader) program.

There is an open source version of the Doom engine called PrBoom (http://prboom.sourceforge.net/). You need the original WAD files or the FreeDoom replacements to actually play the game. The PrBoom code is light enough to run on Rockbox-enabled MP3 players (I've played it on a Sansa e280).

As far as compiling for the XO, since it has an x86 processor it shouldn't be too hard. Just make sure you don't enable Intel- or AMD-specific compiler flags when you run gcc.

I don't think there are plans to put Java on the XO (not like you could do much in Java with such little RAM) but maybe Parrot at some point... then you could drop in bytecode and run it in a VM.

The source code for the original Doom series was released in 1997.  It should be easy to port it directly, rather than try to adapt a Linux version to the XO's API.  Wireless multiplayer deathmatch would be awesome...

SNES all the way. I know some people are really excited about the possibilities with MAME, but the second I can get my hands on a portable version of Chrono Trigger... Well, let's just say there will be drool involved.

There are plenty of SNES emulators out there that can compile for Linux. It is only a matter of time...

Is there anybody out there reading who knows more about taking code (ZSNES, other) and compiling and wrapping it up as an activity? This can't be rocket science...

ZSNES is here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/zsnes/

An active Doom-on-Linux project here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/chocolate-doom/

(There are at least half a dozen SNES and Doom ports for Linux)

Assuming the hardware will be able to handle the larger and generally more graphicly enhanced games like Donkey Kong Country, I gladly volunteer to help test with this initiative.

The XO IS Linux. Besides, PrBoom has been enhanced beyond the original source...
