I've tried several times to use the FAQ instructions to install both the Adobe flash plugin (version 9), and the Opera package.  Every time, I have access to the internet using the Browse activity.  But, during the RPM download, or using wget, I get timed out.  The terminal is trying to connect to 1.0.0.0, rather than the IP address of the appropriate website where the package should be downloaded from.

Um...anyone else have this going on?  Total linux newb here...can't even find files I've downloaded via the browser to be able to install them!

Help!  Thanks forall the help...learning a lot here!

Hi...

When you say:

>   during the RPM download, or using wget, I get timed out.

do you mean the download starts, goes for a while, then stops with a timeout error OR do you mean that wget, for example, just sits there doing nothing and then stops with a timeout error ??

That is strange.   Once you think you are connected to the internet, browse to google.com.
Once there, type in a search for something nonsense like "bing-not0". Do this just to get the answer from google ensuring you actually are online.
then do this and reply with the results.

Are you still using the default XO image?  I know you mentioned you are installing other software, but is sugar still running?  Or are you using the XFCE desktop?

If you are using the sugar interface, look at the /home/olpc/.sugar/default/nm/networks.cfg file.  It has the config for each ssid that it will try to automatically connect to.

mmmm, my wireless network's ssid is indeed in that list.  I also have no problem browsing websites using the Browse activity.

I am indeed using XO's default image and Sugar as the desktop.  I've also found some information about getting this sort of result often times when using Actiontec wireless routers of a certain type.  This isn't my issue, as I've disabled IPv6 access....

I have not installed ANYTHING except for the latest build onto the laptop.  Ugh.

Wow.  I guess I must not be the only one who might be stumped on this one.  Unfortunately, this trouble is preventing me from adding Anything At All to my kids XO's.  It' happening with both of them!

I suppose the next build is right around the corner...maybe I'll wait til then!  (Or try an older build and see if it salutes!)

gefitz, I note that you didn't answer Tom's question:

gefitz, you say that you disabled IPv6 access on your system. How exactly did you do that? If you think that setting "about:config"  "network.dns.disableIPv6" to false in Browse disables IPv6 on your system, then you are very mistaken. That just disables it in the Browse activity but nowhere else-- which would explain why Browse works but everything else fails.

All signs point to the root cause being your Actiontec modem having an IPv6 problem. Have you tried fixing /etc/udhcpd.conf on your Actiontec? Other people have reported that it fixes the problem.

Also, I found these instructions on how to disable IPv6 in Linux which might also fix the problem.

Well, my DSL goes out enough (and requires rebooting of my DSL router) that I dont want to mak e achange to the router every time.  And since all my windows PC's are fine, I'll make changes to my kids' XO's.

The file we're looking for has a different name than  in the referenced file you gave me...insrtead of the filenale "aliases", use "modprobe.conf.dist".  No line pointing to IPv6 existed here, so I added the lines suggested instead of replacing.  Tries my wget command again: no change:  still get "connecting to fpdownload.macromedia.com|1.0.0.0|:80..." and then it times out.

There's another conf file there in that directory to try editing, so I'll try that next...

K, I tried one more conf file in that /etc/modprobe.d/ directory:  olpc.conf.dist.  Only one line in there, and it's got nothing to do with IPV6.

The only two other files in that directory are "blacklist" and "blacklist-compat".

Well.  It was worth a try.  Any other ideas?

THANKS!
