Your disk is full message

I opened up the Record activity today, and got a message that reads "Your disk is full" I can't use any of the functions in Record; picture, video, audio recording.

In terminal, a 'df' command shows that I've got 184 megs available, and I'd think that would be enough to be able to run Record and capture a file.

Any thoughts on what the trouble might be.  A search on the "your disk is full" message doesn't come with anything.  Am I the first?

I'm the second!

I deleted everything out of the journal.

Reboot.

No luck.

Right now my solution to everything has been to reflash, but as soon as I get more than a few hours worth of work into everything, that won't be quite so fun.

Have you run the command df -k to see what mtd0 is holding?  Post the results.

Ummmm...I've used an embarassing mount.  98%
But I've deleted everything I can to try  to fix it.  How do I get that memory back without flashing?

It's not clear what you did after finding out df -k had you at 98%.  You said you deleted stuff.  I hope from the right place.  What does df -k say after the delete?

This was after the deleting.

I deleted in journal -- pretty much anything I'd ever done on the system. All of my files I'd created and most of the activities I've downloaded.

I was trying to create a game in memorize with photos so that probably took up a lot of space.  I deleted it in journal.

I had all the G Compris stuff installed at one point (I'm using mine for kids... that's my disclaimer).  I deleted in journal.

I am going to reflash (AGAIN!) but is there a memory manager activity or something to help me see what's going on in there?  I'm sure this will happen again because I'm trying everything right now.

LesleyT,

Might try saving your work on a USB drive rather than the main drive.

Perhaps some of this information will be of help?

10. Software potpourri: Tomeu Vizoso proposed fixes for a number of bugs that have highest priority: previews are not deleted when their matching datastore objects are removed (Ticket #5707); deleting a large file from a USB stick copies it into NAND (often filling NAND) (Ticket #5719); Sugar shell consuming vast amounts of memory (Ticket #5532); “resuming” a large file from USB copies it into NAND (filling NAND) (Ticket #5744); and objects accumulate on the clipboard, impacting system performance (Ticket #5760).

Lesley,

I jammed up my space with something else, but the result was the same as yours.  I don't think you had to delete the journal.

I was advised to look for the biggest file.  I did that, cleared it, and my main filesystem was back to 46%.

Look at post #6 here:

http://olpcnews.com/forum/index.php?topic=1301.0

and look also at Ben's post #5.

I tried this :

su  [become root]
cd /  [make sure you are in the root directory
du [look for the largest file]
cd /path_to_largest_directory
du [again to make sure you are in the right place]
more <monster_filename> [without the brackets, of course.  This allows you to take a look at the first part of the file.  It was obviouse for me that it was the file I wanted, so I deleted it with...
rm <filename>

but the du command made the pages scroll and scroll

how do I insert a page by page break?

man, it's been a long time since I did any command line stuff.  Not since the VAX system at my college.

uhhh forgot I had a scroll bar

thanks

even with the page scroll, it still went too far to scroll back to

More questions:
1) how do I save to a USB?  I will work on that

2) I saw the software notes in the wiki and that is really what is happening here.  I'm in widely experimental mode.  I want to see what everything does!  But it's all staying on the xo... not good.  I will end up flashing it -- again!! -- because of the sheer amount of mess I've created on this poor thing.  But I'm sure this will continue to happen to me until I understand more of how the file system works.

I'll play around with things.

Smiley

Thanks!

du -h | more might make it clearer.  The -h switch puts it in K(ilobytes) or M(egabytes).  Look for the largest M file.

Maybe flashing might save you a lot of time.

I have installed all of my new programs on a usb drive and I run them from there.  This way I still have all that install work.  Also, since the SD drive is kind of hidden and takes a twist of the screen and lifting the XO to take it out, I put all my mp3 music there so that I can just leave it.

I also suggest that if you flash it you use the latest  build, which I think is still 653.  I also keep those two files needed for flashing on the pen drive with my programs (opera, skype, mplayer, so far).  I only have a 1GB drive and when I have an 8 that will hold a lot of stuff.
