Photo set on Flickr.

I just posted photos and links of two USB ethernet adapters that work with the XO. These are of course useful when you just have wired access. I show the D-link used by the OLPC team and a really tiny one made by Linksys. Both are about US$ 25.00.

Belkin makes one too, but I haven't tested it.

Please let us know if you've successfully tried other models.

Thanks for the high quality photos, nice to know there are other options if wireless isn't available.

This is more of a note to myself: The OLPC wkki has a short list of compatible USB ethernet adapters

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/USB_ethernet_adaptors

They list the two adapters I have pictured here and ask for confirmation on D-Link DUN E100, NetGear FA120 and SMC 2209USB/ETH.

I had a REALTEK single-chip USB to fast ethernet (generic case) laying around.  I just plugged it in and it works.
It was some generic thing I got for $20 some where.

Hi Torokun,
Yes I just tried the Nintendo Wii USB Lan Adapter, and it works fine.
(ASIX Elec. Corp. chip set)

I had to restart after using the REALTEK.   (I forgot it is Linux, not OSX :-)

Enjoy

Sweetness!  I will be testing it as soon as my XO comes in.  Smiley

I came upon this in the XO Shipping Thread & think I will try this before looking for an adapter:

hkrieger writes in #108 Re: Have you recieved your G1G1 OLPC yet? "....I don't have a wireless connection.  The olpc works fine with a USB cable to my DSL modem."

I don't have wireless at home either My desktop is hooked up with ethernet so I was concentrating on that. I kind of knew my cable modem had a USB port, but out of sight out of mind, I guess. I didn't think to turn the modem around to look until I read the post.

Has anyone else with a DSL modem tried this? Sadly, I don't have a spare cable hanging around and don't want to battle last minute shoppers this weekend to try it.

We have DSL (not cable). I used a Belkin USB-ethernet adapter from a Windows 98 laptop and it worked almost immediately without any tweaking. Plugged the usb into the XO and the cat5 cable from the router into the adapter and within 20 sconds, I was online Smiley
You may even have an extra cat5 cable lying around your house. They are real inexpensive at monoprice. (got 1 last week and a hub was dirt cheap too.) They even have colors if you want Green Wink
goodluck.

Forum member Carol found this cool little USB ethernet adapter on eBay. It only goes for $2.97 plus $4.99 shipping & handling. It comes in green too. We have NOT yet verified if this works with the XO.

It's hard to visualize from the photo how far this will hang out from the side of the XO, but add to that the ethernet plug and curve of the cable. Other adapters, though not as tiny, hang from a short pigtail of cable so that the ethernet cable falls more naturally without stressing the adapter.

You know... when I tried it first time, it worked...

But, every since I updated my OS to get the WPA wireless working, Nintendo Wii USB Lan Adapter doesn't work anymore...

Sad

Very sad... I still haven't got my WPA work either...

Hi!

After reading about WiFi and knowing that it is not as fast as Cat 5 cable, I decided to get 50 ft. of Cat 5 Ethernet wire for $15 and the D-Link DUB-E100 Ethernet USB adapter. Now, I do not need to get a WiFi Router.  Grin

I looked at the cheaper adapters and was concerned of their abilities to be durable, so that is why I got the larger D-Link adapter. http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=133

I had read that the small LinkSys adapter sometimes would not work, unless the wire was repostioned.
