I'm curious about everything.

It's called the ZoWii now. It doesn't need any additional drivers for the XO--it just works.

This is more of a note to myself: The OLPC wkki has a short list of compatible USB ethernet adapters

They list the two adapters I have pictured here and ask for confirmation on D-Link DUN E100, NetGear FA120 and SMC 2209USB/ETH.

i can confirm that the SMC 2209USB/ETH works fine.

And now, ZoWii is enlisted in on the OLPC wiki, http://wiki.laptop.org/go/USB_ethernet_adaptors.

I have the XO and cannot get it to work on WiFi.  I ordered a Linksys Etherfast 10/100 compact USB Network Adapter.  My desktop PC is connected to a modem to hi speed cable.  I thought I could connect the adapter between the XO and the modem, but it appears that I am missing some sort of cable that connects to the RJ-45 port.   I am a little lost now.  Also it came with a CD and I have no idea if I am supposed to load the CD into the XO???.  I need help.   Tedster.

you don't need the CD.  the CD contains drivers for Windows.  linux already has the drivers it needs.

you do need a cable an ethernet cable to connect the XO to your network -- i assume your PC has a cable, and it will be just like that one.

does your cablemodem have multiple RJ-45 jacks on it?  if so, you just need a new cable, and you can plug both your PC and the XO into the cablemodem.  if not, you need to buy a small ethernet router to put in between the cablemodem and your home network.  (your home network currently only has one device on it -- your PC -- so you don' t need a router.  now that you're about to add the XO, you'll need the router.  it will have multiple ports on it.)

you _might_ be able to just unplug your PC from the cablemodem and plug in your XO instead, but sometimes that doesn't work, depending on the cable company.

Thanks, I will get the router tomorrow.  I also picked up the ethernet cable.  So before I unplug my desktop and connect my XO, what steps should I take?  I have the XO turned on.  Do I just connect it to the modem and then click browse?  Or are there some other steps I must take?

Well I got the router and the ethernet adapter does not work with either the router or directly into the cable modem.  Of course, I am plugged into the modem and when I get to my home page I select Browser and go to a page with "Google" on it.  However, if I try either the top bar or the google bar I get to a page error loaded.  Also, now that I have a wireless browser I can see the locked circle with my name on it, but when I click on it, I am asked for my password, which I supply and I get to the page error loaded page.  Sad(  I am pretty frustrated I must admit.  At this rate I could have bought a small lap top.  Sad

Okay, I called Linksys and the removed all encryption from my router, so I can actually get on the internet,  However, obviously the ethernet adapter does not work.  Despite it being listed as "works" from the box.    Can I get one of these new ones before I leave for N.Z on the 15th?  Or am I doing something wrong with the hard wire connection?  Certainly not impossible.  lol.

Depends on the interest from user groups.

I would be interested in one if/when they are availible for public sale.
Did the ZoWii ever get made available for public sale anywhere?  The Zoltan Tech page doesn't indicate anywhere that it is available to buy...

#40 "Full Speed USB" = USB 1.1, *not* 2.0

Also just wanted to throw something in that I got burned by, back in the day when 512MB MP3 players were pretty big storage...

Look carefully at the descriptions for the cheap, generic eBay USB/Ethernet adapters.  If they have something like this in them:

# Compliant to USB interface Version 1.0/1.1/2.0
# Full-Speed USB device

...then it's unlikely to work with the XO-1.  The three USB speeds are Low (1.5Mbps), Full (12Mbps = USB 1.1 standard) and Hi (480Mbps). These "Full Speed" adapters are thus among the "USB 1.1" adapters that are mentioned in the wiki.

(Unfortunately, NOT having that in the description is no guarantee that it will work either - I've seen other, identical adapters where that bit of info was simply left out.)

This stuck out to me when I was perusing the descriptions because, years ago, I received
a 512MB MP3 player with 'USB 2.0' all over its packaging as a holiday gift.  Transferring songs to it from a machine with a USB 2.0 port, though, was MUCH slower than I expected.  Digging into its documentation turned up similar information to the above, 'Compliant'/'Compatible' with USB2.0, 'Full Speed' device ... aka USB 1.1 speed Sad

So keep an eye out for that 'Full Speed' thing!

I am coming into this in the middle so if I am totaly off topic Im sorry.

The Belkin USB to Ethernet adaptor is Full speed and works great.

Hi folks,

Does anyone know if the Apple AirPort Express works?  Considering it instead of an usb adapter for when I travel.

Time to cheer about my latest purchase. I ordered one of the USB Ethernet adapters from XO Explosion on Monday (24-March) and received it this afternoon (28-March). UP HERE IN CANADA!

Even better, I plugged it in, entered the MAC address into my router, rebooted and Bingo! fast internet.

This is about as good as service gets! If you're wondering which dongle to get, take this as two thumbs up. Green, to boot.
