Thanks Greg - I will have to try this. I am still trying to hook up to the cable modem at my house. I tried a USB cable from the USB port in the back of the cable modem into the XO and nothing. I then tried a USB cable to ethernet adapter and then into the ethernet port and still nothing. Even when rebooting it didn't work - it just kept getting stuck in the start-up song until I unplugged everything. Frustrating that I can't get on the Internet at home, but I do have WiFi in my office. I am sure my boss will understand.

Hi!

Remember to turn unplug other connections coming out of your Cable modem and unplug the unit 5-10 seconds while your XO is also off or it will not operate!

This is expecting of course, your desktop is getting internet through the Ethernet cable or USB cable.

Thank you so much for that info.  It did the trick.

Forum member Carol found this cool little USB ethernet adapter on eBay. It only goes for $2.97 plus $4.99 shipping & handling. It comes in green too. We have NOT yet verified if this works with the XO.

This generic adapter did NOT work.  I rebooted XO 4 times without success.  However, I did not turn off the modem at any time.  I also tried the D-Link DUB-E100 which Mike and others as well as OLPC have successfully used and it worked both times I tried.  That was after rebooting XO but, as in my trial with the generic adapter, I did not turn off the modem.   The model number of the generic product is KH-886 and it is in working order as my Windows computer found it.

I picked up a "store brand" USB-Ethernet adapter at CompUSA for about $20. It worked on the first boot up.

One question - it did not appear to let me see anyone from the xochat.org neighborhood. Does the ability to see other users only come with the wireless connections ?

Can anyone connecting over wired Ethernet confirm ?

Carol, thank you for the update. I've added a note to the other references I made to this adapter on this forum and Flickr.

When I used a wired Ethernet connection from the modem (via the D-Link DUB-E100 USB adapter), there were only the three mesh circles in my Neighborhood view.

I have not tried the xochat.org neighborhood and don't know how it works or how it might be affected.

Just used the TRENDnet TU2-ET100 (Radio Shack $25).... plugged it in, reboot my XO, and voila!... it works just fine.

I bought the LinkSys USB200M 10/100 USB-Ethernet adaptor (I thought somone had posted success with this particular one) and tried it

It works for some time (out of the box) and then cuts out - I get page load errors in the browser although status lights are lit up on the device.  This happened twice (First time hot-pluged after boot and second time plugged in before boot), I guess I need to investigate further before giving it a total thumbs-down.

I have read reports that this Linksys adapter is poorly designed and the tab that locks the Ethernet cable into the unit breaks, rendering the unit inoperable.  Just a thought - maybe you have a connection problem there.

Yeah, I ordered the Linksys despite the comments because I was interested in a very small adapter to use in a pinch in hotels while traveling. Even if it turns out to deliver a stable connection with the XO, it wouldn't be good for day-to-day use, and would not hold up long with a young child around.

By the end of the month, one of the members of our DC user group, Jonathan Hsu, will be releasing to market a new, XO and Wii compatible USB-ethernet adapter. He's bringing some to our meeting on January 31st. Here are some photos of the prototype that Wayan and I have been testing:

The last two photos are of the near-final production model. The adapter is made in clear so that it can be left that way or painted white inside to match the Wii, or yes, green to go with the XO. I know he is going after the Wii market, but he hasn't decided on how many he'll do in green. Depends on the interest from user groups. The price will also be much lower than other adapters.

Hi!

I attached the D-Link adapter to my XO and noticed that the adapter was too heavy as it hung from the USB connection. I attached a 1 foot long USB extension and it solved the problem. I could imagine that the USB connection would have been damaged if regularly used without my USB cord.

Depends on the interest from user groups.

I would be interested in one if/when they are availible for public sale.
