XO Received Christmas Eve!

Here's my blog post about it:
http://www.offlinetshirts.com/blog/index.php/2007/12/28/vnc-on-the-xo-remote-control-computing/

The basics:
I ran TightVNC on my desktop computer.

The XO comes with a VNC viewer. You just run it from Terminal by typing "vncviewer".

EDIT: Fixed the command (thanks Joshuajon!)

Feel free to use my G1G1 flyer
I'm also making custom XO logo gear.

You're gonna wanna type "vncviewer"  (no space, no quotes" at the terminal.)

If you have a Remote Desktop enabled Windows install (I believe you need XP Pro or higher, the home edition didn't include it) you can just use rdesktop. That way you don't have to have any extra software. I'm a Mac user so vncviewer is my only shot Tongue.

jonknee, did you have any luck with doing this?  I'm a Mac guy, too, and I keep running into trouble. It seems to accept my password but then just dumps me back at Terminal with a bunch of text about connected to 192.168 etc, etc, but ends with "End of stream".

Not sure what I'm doing wrong here.

Yep, I got it working. The default VNC server in OS X is a bit wonky and does seem to throw a lot of errors. I have had problems with it before, not just with the OLPC. It's an easy fix though, just run Vine Server. Works as expected.

Any ideas about how to escape "full screen" without just restarting Sugar?

Actually, never mind--hitting the screen-rotate button kills it.

hm, when I enter the password, it looks like it's about to pull up a new screen, but then in dumps me back at Terminal.  The last thing Terminal tells me is something about "Assertion limit failed" plus  bunch of stuff I don't know what it is.  Ah, I figuered out how to copy something from Terminal, so here's exactly the last thing Terminal said:

vncviewer: TXScrollbar.cxx:47: void TXScrollbar::set(int, int, int, bool): Assertion `limit_ > 0 && len_ >= 0 && len_ <= limit_' failed.
Aborted

Can anyone translate that?

Are you running Vine Server or the standard OS X VNC server? You should try Vine if you're not using it already.

Did you read the blog post linked to in the article at the top?  It has examples and a picture.

I used x11vnc (different vnc package) to drive a Linux laptop hooked up to a data projector on Saturday -- the XO doesn't come with any handy data ports for cabling to a data projector.

Hello, i´m from uruguay, today a teacher ask me about how to project the xo screen, so vnc seems logic, but all the howtos asumed implicitly that you were able to get root access, which is not the case with the machine given on my country Undecided. So... can you do the same trick, without su? Huh

Thanx in advance,
Luis

You can even in Uruguay without  a known root password have a remote session with your xo (rdesktop, vnc), you can also copy/paste files and folders trough ssh or ftp

Here is a link for this in spanish but you can use google translate.

The xo laptop is a good thin client.
Just imagine what you could do with a powerful server at school.....
