Wireless Compatibility List

Let's try this again.  I've recently found out that my wireless router is on the "probably doesn't work well list" with regard to XO's, and I'll start this list off.  I've got a few things at work that I can try it with, and I'll put those on the list as well, but for now, it looks like I need to invest in a new wireless router for my house, and I'm looking for what's working "in the wild", so that I don't have to go through this again.

Edit: Please list your findings and just post that category.  I will update the list on the first post.

1.  Works Flawlessly

2.  Works with reduced security settings
     a. NETGEAR Wireless-G WGR614 v7 on channel 1 using WEP 128
     b Belkin F5D6231-4 using WEP 64
     c. LinkSys WRT54G.
Basic wireless settings, default except for wireless network name.
           Wireless network mode = mixed,
           Wireless channel 6 - 2.437GHz,
           Wireless SSID Broadcast: Enable
Wireless security settings: (note: "Disabled" works fine, too)
          Security mode: WEP
          Default transmit key: 1
WEP encryption: 64 bits 10 Hex digits
          Passphrase: [suppressed; eight characters]
I had to enter the 10-character generated hex code key #1 on the XO,
        i.e. I couldn't just use the passphrase.
3.  Doesn't work at all
     a.  Belkin Pre-N Router (Model F58230-4 v.2)

Quote it and pass it on...

I just upgraded my XO to build 653 and it connected with no problem using WPA to a Westell 327W wireless router on my Verizon DSL line.  Took the text passphrase without a hitch.  Just upgraded the router to the latest firmware upgrade 4.##.  Don't know how the prior versions work.

God I know I am going to feel foolish asking this...but how did you do this?  We are using a westell 327  using WEP  and I cannot, for the life of me, get online. Do I need to get build 653? How do I do that?

I think this may be beyond me, and with no technical help nearby, it is beginning to feel like a wash...

I'm feeling even more foolish.  I use a computer all the time at work and at home but never wireless...I don't know what any of you are talking about and I wouldn't know where to start...

oh, let's see, first I need to get my new computer to boot...my start-up message was "Boot Failure" so I'm working with the Help desk.  It's likely I'll need a replacement.  In the meantime, I am so not-knowledgeable about wireless I thought I might need the T-Mobile account to get it up and running, so I signed up... Embarrassed

Anyway, once I get a computer that works (I'll likely have to get a replacement)...I will be back to learn about all this wireless stuff...

How in the world are the children going to do this?  I hope they get a team of people to set up for them...

Hi NYLady,
You don't have to go the wireless route to access the internet on your XO.  Mike Lee is compiling a list in the Accessories section of Ethernet to USB adapters which will work with the XO.  So with one of these you would have a wired connection that plugs into one of the USB jacks on your XO -  or your Windows (maybe apple and linux too) -  computer.  And it's automatic, no configuration needed.

2.  Works with reduced security settings
     a. NETGEAR Wireless-G WGR614 v7 on channel 1 using WEP 128

I had to log in to the Linksys WRTG54 router and change the wireless channel from the default (1) to (11). I think maybe it was conflicting with some other wireless routers in the area who are almost certainly operating in their default channels (1?). After changing that parameter the XO caught the router signal quickly and I was surfing.

I thought maybe it had something to do with NetworkManagerDispatcher needing to be restarted, but the problem was definitly with the router setup, not the XO. Oh, and I haven't set the WEP or anything like that just FYI.

Works with reduced security - I did not try the more secure options
LinkSys WRT54GL.
Basic wireless settings, default except for wireless network name.
           Wireless network mode = mixed,
           Wireless channel 6
        Wireless security settings:
          Security mode: WEP
WEP encryption: 64 bits - 10 ASCII characters

Works flawlessly:
Linksys WRT54G, on ch1 using WPA-Personal (TKIP), regular alphanumeric key, wireless MAC filter employed.

I cannot log in using Netgear Wireless Router WGR614v6. I don't claim to know much about this, but It seems to require a 128 bit passphrase, Hex or ASCII when I don't seem to have any of those, and it won't accept my 64bit, WEP key #1. Any suggestions?

I purchased the TRENDnet TU2-ET100 from the list of adapters that work, but it doesn't work. The adapter came with a CD, and once installed, works fine on my Dell/Windows XP laptop. Any suggestions?

You need to help out those who can possibly diagnose this by posting your build number and the encryption of the router you are trying to connect to (no encryption, WEP, or WPA).

If it is looking for WPA and if you have build 650, it won't connect.  You would need 653.

You can see your build with the command:

cat /boot/olpc_build

That will return a number.

If I suggest it, I have tested it on my XO.
