Does anybody know what (or where to find a list of ) the different colors are that are mixed together to make the X and O? I think I read somewhere that there are 40 different colors.

There are 20 different colors, and like wade said, 400 combinations.

Weirdly, the OLPC wiki says that there are 29 colors for the XO user icon. http://wiki.laptop.org/go/XO_colors
Some pairs of them look indistinguishable to me, so its possible that they slimmed it down to 20 more distinct ones for the manufacturing process.

These are hex colors, so they are intended for use on a screen. OLPC may well have 29 different colors for the screen-based XO icon while only having 20 for the case logo.

I haven't rec'd mine yet, so I only know what I've read on these boards.... but it seems that you can select what color you want your onscreen icon to be.
