Since I previously installed the flash plugin for the standard browser, the XO would not let me install the .48 release since the .115 release, which is newer, is already installed.  Anyone have plan B?

Got to this page:

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Adobe_Flash

and scroll down to the bottom.  It gives the instructions on how to uninstall flash.  You can un-install the 115 and the install the 48...

I had originally installed 115 and used these commands to get rid of it and put on 48 and they worked.

Please could you explain these instructions to newbie non techies:

ie
1. when do you type // or #? whenever they are mentioned?? right at beginning??

2. when do you include spaces? difficult to read, are they before -?

3. not always clear what symbols.

4. maybe a screenshot would help, eg should I be seeing: "bash-3.2#" after typing su
& should I insert another #

5. Should I not be attempting this?

As su type in
yum remove flash-plugin-9.0.115.0-release

to remove the old version.

and then use the above instructions.

(Thanks for the hint not to use the latest flash release. I couldn;t figure out why flash was working in the Browse activity, but not in Opera.)

Every time I try "rpm -vi http://snapshot.opera.com/unix/olpc-544/opera-9.12-20070122.10-static-qt.i386-en.rpm"
I first get a message saying the file is being retrieved, then I get a message telling me that the transfer failed due to an unknown or unexpected error.   This is accompanied by :
"warning: u 0x807d388 ctrl 0x807d9d8 nrefs !=0 (snapshot.opera.com http)"

I have no idea what any of this means.  I can navigate to http://snapshot.opera.com/unix/olpc-544 without any difficulty, and I can see the file opera-9.12-20070122.10-static-qt.i386-en.rpm available to be downloaded.  I've checked my typing a jillion times, and it's fine.

PS: the tinyurl route doesn't work, either.

Advice?

Try "wget http://snapshot.opera.com/unix/olpc-544/opera-9.12-20070122.10-static-qt.i386-en.rpm"

That will bring a copy to your laptop.  If that fails, at least we know where the problem is.

Afterwards, do an "ls" to make sure the file is in your directory.

Then try "rpm -vi opera-9.12-20070122.10-static-qt.i386-en.rpm"

That will install the local version.

Remember, you have to switch to 'su' before doing the 'rpm' command.

Thanks for your help describing how to uninstall the newer version of Flash and installing the older version to work with the Opera browser.  This forum is an excellent resource.

This is for Jane #16 and jfh #19. Yes, you can do it.    Shouldn't need to, but may have to if the intended user was expecting to be able to do something that is not pre-installed.  In my case the "get" recipients are a couple of kids who love Tux Paint and PBSkids games; so I've no choice but to return after many, many years to typing in arcane commands.

As for the edit statement in the first post, "edit by torokun:(",  that was just a parenthetical remark alerting people to be careful to type eye-386 or el-386 (can't read it) instead of one-386.  The instructions in the wikis may be a tad easier to follow than those in the forums. We are not their intended audience so they employ a lot of assumptions and shorthand.

Here are a couple of suggestions for warmups before you install opera.  Find the terminal activity and open it.  Click up near the dollar sign to get your cursor going. Press the enter button a few times.  See the gobbletygook "word" that keeps appearing?  Ends with a $? That is the computer saying "ready, your turn".  Think of the whole thing as a dialogue between you and your little xo.  After a few enter presses try writing su before you press enter.  Aha! you have told it that you are invoking your superpowers.  The prompt word will change to something with a bash in it and end with a hash mark, #.  Now write exit then press enter.  The prompt word will change back to normal.  (You have exited your superpower mode, not the program itself.)  Now find the x in the upper right hand corner and click on that.  That will get you out of the terminal activity.

Next install tux paint.  Even if you don't have little kids about, it is very cute.  And it will work.  And it will give you confidence. The instructions are here:  http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Tux_Paint
There are only 6 commands you actually enter:
wget http://dev.laptop.org/~albert/TuxPaint-1.xo
su
yum install libpaper
y
cd /usr/share/activities
unzip /home/olpc/TuxPaint-1.xo

I've probably mistyped those, and I don't know why the person who gave the wiki instructions didn't include an exit, but note that you got a file, put on your superpowers, installed something that the file needed but was missing, answered a question yes, changed to a different directory, then unzipped the file.  Remember that you will have to wait for a bizarre "ready" prompt before you can enter each command and that can take a while, long enough for a cup of coffee while you watch the screen in bewildered fascination. Immediately close up the terminal and reboot, then you can then go on to try Opera, Adobe Flash, etc.  (After playing with the penguin.)

HI,

You are probably seriously tired of getting this but I'm not able to install OPERA. I am not very familiar w/ programming and don't remember typing in any commands since I gave up my apple about 12 years ago.
I am in Terminal window and online and after the $ sign I skipped a space, started w/ sudo-i:#rpm-vi (space) then that incredibly long string (checked for accuracy) ended w/ .rpm then hit enter and typed #opera (enter)

What am I doing wrong?
Many thanks to all. I appreciate this help. I am SERIOUSLY loving my XO and all my friends are quite envious!  Smiley

Try this, just like I'm typing it (note the spaces):

su
rpm -ivh opera*rpm
exit
opera

Then, if Opera doesn't start, let us know exactly what it says after you type in the "rpm" line.

Hi!

I got Opera reinstalled using these commands at Terminal!

su

wget http://snapshot.opera.com/unix/olpc-544/opera-9.12-20070122.10-static-qt.i386-en.rpm

rpm -ivh opera*rpm
exit
opera

- now install the file needed to have opera show up in sugar. First you have to get to the activities folder. At the prompt type: cd /usr/share/activities

- download the files by typing:
    wget http://people.opera.com/howcome/2007/olpc/opera-activity.tar.gz

- uncompress by typing: tar xvzf opera-activity.tar.gz

- get out of console by hitting ctl+alt+home (circle with the small dot at the top left of the keyboard)

- restart sugar by hitting ctl+alt+erase
- Shutdown from the XO character on the desktop.

- find opera in the activities menu and browse."

I can browse any website.  But when attempting to download RPMs from terminal, I get (every time) failed-Connection Timed Out.

This has happened with 2 different versions of flash, and with the OLPC opera RPM's.  Also using wget commends.  Where do I start to troubleshoot?
