I'm not sure if this will help. I'm a newbie myself, and this is what i did to get the install to work for in/out audio calls.
yum --nogpgcheck -y localinstall skype-2.0.0.68-fc5.i586.rpm
it intalled for me (build 656), i don't know if by doing so i messed myself up for the video install. You can try it if you like.

Hello,
I am not sure if I did anything wrong but, I installed gstfakevideo in the / directory and I followed the instructions on
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Skype
. When I look into skype options for the video I get GStreamer fake video (/dev/video0) is there a way to point skype to video1??? Otherwise, I get the following error when I start the video, which starts to work and show video on the other machine b4 it craps out.
Starting the process...
Skype Xv: Xv ports available: 1
Skype XShm: XShm support enabled
Skype XV: Using Xv port 56
Skype Xv: Xv ports available: 0
Skype XShm: XShm support enabled
Aborted
then it exits.
I would appreciate any help

yeah im getting stuck getting the video to work too. the same "no element v412src" showing up. i've tried a bunch of things but i'd like to get some things straight.
where is the gstfakevideo files (the gst.c and so on) supposed to be located? if they're supposed to be in /root/ then that sucks because i dont' want to have to get into root user just to run skype with video.
when i DO run ./gstfakevideo as the command in /root as super user i start up skype and it hangs and gives me a grey screen with some indents like it loaded a bit of the GUI and then died. ideas?
UPDATE: ok so i moved all the files from /root/ to /home/olpc and BINGO. worked all perfect shows up with preview and shows up as GStreamer fake video (/dev/video0) in the select webcam drop box. brilliant.
anyone got a heads up on the sugarization of skype?

Hi to all XO/Skype hackers around....
As many of you, I got skype 2.0.0.68 working on the XO w/ video-in, but
no video out
. As soon as I activate my video, it crashes badly...
Trying to find a way around this..
Anyway, I slightly modified the original 'gstfakevideo' script to automatically detect if '/dev/video0' needs to be renamed and export the correct GST_PIPE variable.
I renamed the original '/usr/bin/skype' to '/usr/bin/skype.bin' and then wrote this script and saved it as '/usr/bin/skype' with 0755 permissions.
In this way, I don't have to cast the magic spell every time, just run 'skype'.

Worked fine for me, so far.
Do note that you won't be able to move video0 to video1 unless you're root and then - skype will refuse to load normally, at least for me, when invoked as root. If I manually rename the device and then run the aforementioned script as a normal user, everything works as a charm.
(Why doesn't skype work under superuser anyway? Not that this is a bad thing, but it doesn't make sense)

It seems to work ok with video-in OR video-out. They both work, given that only one of them is ran at a time. However, trying to run them both at the same time results in termination.
"Aborted" is all it says on the terminal at that point. I also had an abyssimal framerate for both, but it was due to a very bad network connection, I should retry it on a faster one.

Hello. After installing skype on build 656, I get this error message when starting up in the terminal:
skype: error while loading shared libraries:libXss.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I see that another contributor had this same problem, but I don't see any response from anyone with a proposed solution. Thanks in advance for your help. JCR

Has anyone gotten video in AND out working at the same time? Both work by themselves fine, but I'm experiencing Atilla's problem that it crashes immediately after having both activated simultaneously.

Hola,
I updated these instructions so you can use the Polish website to get the older non web cam version of Skype.
I was unable to run the web cam version of Skype and the voice was garbled.
With the old version, doing Chat and Voice can be done, but you can't get back to chat sometimes, so you need to restart when that happens.

**UPDATE** These instructions are for installing a version of skype WITHOUT video chat. I am still working getting that version to work on the XO, please see post #2 in this thread.
********
The instructions are below and assume you have some knowledge and comfort with starting a terminal through the Sugar UI and then typing in varous linux commands. *NOTE* The terminal activity is on the second page of activities and is a box with a "$_" in it.
To install skype, start a terminal and to become super user enter:
su
Then to install a library skype will need enter:
yum install libsigc++20
Then to get the skype install files (the linux static version) enter:
wget
http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-static
This gives you the newest version, so do not use it.
Go to
http://www.idg.pl/ftp/pobierz/linux/1862.html
Then type wget and the file link such as shown below.
wget
http://i.download.idg.pl/fannef/3a5b42fd4d5380a427f4cc2a5ba1d2d6/4c585b6b/vol2/linux/komunikacja/skype/1.4.0.118/skype_static-1.4.0.118.tar.bz2
The link changes over time.
Then to untar it type: (BUT SEE HINT BELOW)
tar xvf skype_static-1.4.0.118.tar.bz2
*HINT* you can just type in "tar xvf sky" but DO NOT press enter but instead press and hold down "control" and then at press "tab" and it will auto fill in the rest for you. Then press enter.
cd skype_static-
<version>
*HINT* again just type in "cd sky" and then press "control tab" to have it autofill in the rest
mkdir /usr/share/skype
cp -a * /usr/share/skype/
cd /usr/share/skype/
mv skype /usr/bin/
mv skype.conf /etc/dbus-1/system.d/
So you should be all set now. Remember you are still super user, so I suggest killing/stopping your terminal, then starting it again.
At the prompt just type "skype" and give it a good 10-15 seconds to start-up.
It seems to be working pretty well for me, but I am using it at home with a full wifi-signal.
You will notice that the formating/font is a little off. For instance to get to the main skype menu you have to hit the TEENY TINY little blue skype icon in the lower left hand corner. Also note that RIGHT click (which is the "0" track pad button) is used. In the middle of you screen should be your contacts. To call one you put the mouse over the name with the track pad and then RIGHT click....
If you have used skype before this version will be easy to get use to. If you are BRAND NEW to skype I would recommend using it on a laptop or desktop first just to get use to using skype.
So far I've only called other skype users, I haven't tried to skype-out. This version does NOT support video, there IS a beta version for linux that does (version 2.0) but I'll probably wait until it is NOT beta before trying it. I am not too confident as the little XO seems to have issues with video. Who knows it could surprise us all...
I'm also unsure if it support skypecasts, I've found links that seem to indicate it does:
https://developer.skype.com/Docs/ApiDoc/Skype_API_on_Linux
But I do see it, but right now skype on my windows xp laptop says that the skypecast server is down. So who knows....
