[Newbie Question] Planescape Torment

Hi all; I'm looking forward to getting my XO in the mail in a day or two, and I realized that I need to brush up on my linux skills as a result. It's been a loooooooooong time.

One way I want to go about re-learning what I've forgotten is through getting games to run on the XO. So, out of curiosity (and because somebody mentioned a DOSBox in another thread), how would I go about getting Planescape: Torment to run on the XO? Would such a thing be even possible?

My apologies if creating a new thread isn't the best way to go about asking. Just call me curious!

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Sorry, addendum: Another fun one to try and wrangle into working would be, of course, Fallout. Or Fallout 2. Smiley

Or Arcanum http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/arcanum-of-steamworks-magick-obscura done by some people who did Fallout and left the company. I think the first thing should be install dosbox:
su -
yum install dosbox

Then, good luck Smiley as these games where CD based, so you'll need an external CD reader, and configure dosbox to see it.

All I can do is raise a glass-- that would be really awesome.

I've never played Planescape Torment, but was addicted to the Baldur's Gate series for a couple of years.

I have to get the XO before I can test any of this, obviously. But once I have it I'll have to figure out how to get Windows-formatted games up and running in a Linux environment. DOSBox is a good start, but I'm not sure how far it'll go. Hrm.

Maybe field test Doom and Marathon first? That might help me get a grip on the foundations.

And hope the wife goes easy on you, too. Cheesy

sorry to be the bearer of bad news but theres no way that planescape, bladers gate, fallout, etc, will run on the xo. The machine just doesnt have that kind of power
(i wish it did though, that would rock all kinds of...rocking...ness)

anyway, there's a game that was for the sega genisis entitled shadow run. no garentees that even a genisis emulator will work (i believe they are having some problems with the snes emulators) but if u can get it up and running, that game should do quite nicely.

I cannot really comment on the games themselves because I'm not too knowledgable about games or DOSBox.  But I have been able to connect a CD-ROM to the XO with a USB-to-IDE adapter, and you can mount any path on your filesystem from within DOSBox with the "mount" command.  So there's no harm in trying.

Planescape Torment needs at least 200 MHz of processing power, Windows 95/98 and DirectX 6.  I don't think DOSBox is going to be all that you need, even if you made yourself a warez-like rip for a USB key.
