I took apart my PSP and broke it.
Now I just look at the pictures of the OLPC on their web-site.
cause I don't want to break my OLPC.
Their is nothing inside I cannot access outside via USB or mic,ear
And programming in C++ The stuff inside will be too small to see, or solder.
But I guess you are adventurous. go for it!

Ive done it twice, its fun! Keep your screws organized though. Take a piece of paper and group them by area you took them out of. Circle each group with a pen and write where they came out of. Most of the screws are the same sizes, but a few a different.

This thread made me scared:

It's not like you can pop down to Best Buy and pick up a new one.

I took apart the bottom half to clean the keyboard - which requires removing the top half -  and I have to agree wth clm42 - group and label each grouping of screws (battery compartment, hinge, handle, keyboard, screen face, etc).

The first time I reassembled I had 4 screws left over.  Shocked  So I just re-disassembled and realized they were to hold the back of the keyboard down - I hadn't labeled the groups.

Something else I learned (that ashtond33 didn't) is if a tool is required to pry something apart, the prying is no more than 1/8" if everything is where it should be. So DON'T FORCE - readjust.

Hi!

If you think you can afford to lose your XO, then open it up and play with it!

I will not be doing it anytime soon, since I have attempted to solder radios before and made them a pile of junk!

It would have been nice to hear that replacement parts were not available before getting an XO. Even right now, my down arrow is stuck while I read the XO in bed. I sure will not be opening up the machine!  Shocked

I feel I should comment that in my experience taking apart the XO compared to most other electronic devices is not as daunting as it seems.  It has really only 3 kinds of screws to worry about, the screw points are all well placed, and most of the removal is of plastic bezel and connective pieces.  Unlike most electronics most of us have taken apart (and ruined) you actually get the sense that while slightly laborious the disassembly is pretty darned simple.  I wouldn't really suggest you do it unless you need to, but if you're concerned about taking it apart to fix something my only advice is:

-get the information you need first either from OLPC, or here on the forum.
-make sure you have the proper tools for the repair (screwdriver, tray for screws, soldering iron, solder wick, flux, etc etc)
-DON'T FORCE ANYTHING.  The whole thing seems designed (at least once you get down past the shell) around either coming right off, or simply requiring a small amount of play.  If you should come across something that doesn't seem to be responding to your adjustments, it may not come apart in the way you assume.  For example, the ribbon cable fasteners in the xo open by tilting up -not sliding down- this has caused me and others some damage through misapplied force.

Hi!

My down key got repaired!!!

I basically, got frustrated and banged on the key in a complete circle and it finally released the sticky key without disassembly!!

I repaired my sticky keyboard problem by taking it apart and removing the gunk.  At first I was nervous about taking apart my XO and like everyone else said it really is a lot easier to take apart and put together than you think.  I went slow, laid out the each plastic part and put the screws for that part together.  I also followed these directions.

So since all of these people are talking about taking it apart, has anyone figured out what those extra screws behind the battery compartment are for? The wiki says they are extra but that just seems silly. I cant figure it out though.

Yep, they really are extra screws.  They include them just in case you loose some screws.

Yeah, taking apart the XO is mostly just unscrewing a bunch of stuff - not too hard.  I've taken apart the top half twice, and the hardest part is removing the LCD, which is just flipping up a tab and taking out a ribbon.  Smiley
