Before I got the XO I saw a link for installing Flash. I can't seem to find it now. Can somebody help me out? Huh

I got this working on my VM no problem so I would assume it should work fine on one of the OLPCs

I used the link Molly suggested and opted for version 9.0.48.0 (I'm neither brave nor lucky so I did not try for the newest version, which has not been tested). I typed the second command and got an error message after about two minutes:
error: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/lib/flash-plugin/libflashplayer.so;4765b76

So I quit terminal, opened the browser, browsed to Google, and searched for "flash test". I went to the result named "Test Adobe Shockwave and Flash. Then I clicked the "click to play" link in the Flash section and saw an animation that said "Experience Powerful Results" and text that said "installation successful". So I guess I can stop worrying about that error message.

Are you sure that isn't Gnash showing itself? Smiley
It's a free software replacement of adobe's flash, and is what comes installed by default as a flash alternative. But because it wasn't compiled with some codecs that olpc can't ship, it doesn't really work to see typical youtube videos. But I have hopes that it will become better, and eventually even become more performant on this little machine than Adobe's flash (which have their aims more at high-end computers).

I think you're right. I just tried YouTube and instead of the familiar play |> icon, I got a "click to play" link. When I clicked, there was no error message and I saw a circle of dots as if it were trying to load the particular video but after a few minutes on a couple of videos and seeing nothing but dots I ran out of patience. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Did switch to root, i.e., first typed
su - <enter>
before installing flash?

I am in the middle of following the flash player installation instructions, and it is asking me to "enter the installation path of the Mozilla, Netscape, or Opera browser". What should I put here? It didn't like /usr/lib/mozilla even though I checked and that path does exist. I am su'd to root.

More generally, is there concise documentation anywhere that lays out what, at the linux level, is the name of the various sugar programs - I can't figure out how I would even know what the file name is for the customized web browser.

Thanks!

I ran the install from the adobe flash instructions and now I get a blank screen whenever I access an internet webpage with a flash video.

Anyone know how to go back to the original plug-in?

I _think_ that to uninstall a package in Fedora (base of the XO's OS), you do as root:

yum remove <package-name>

The package name should be either "flash-plugin", or "flash-plugin-9.0.48.0-release" or "flash-plugin-9.0.48.0-release.i386" (I'm basing this from the name of the rpm).

I'm not a Fedora user... although a XO user :/

"yum remove flash-plugin-9.0.48.0-release" worked to remove the flash player. I am no longer getting white screens. Thanks! Now I just need to get Gnash working again.

rpm -i http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/flash-plugin-9.0.115.0-release.i386.rpm

This release worked for me. I can get videos to play now.

Astious, good to hear Flash is working for you. Are videos and animated graphics playing smoothly?
