=== UPDATE: Racy 5.3 Apr. 6, 2012, BELOW ===

=== New 50MB Puppylinux Saluki below. March 3, 2012 ===

As you may know if you follow XOpup, you can now build any recent puppylinux version for the XO, automatically.
So I build the final version of, Puppylinux Racy 5.2.2 for the OLPC XO-1.

At just 90 MB is the same as XOpup-2.2, but  it includes the full Mozilla Seamonkey suit, Gnumeric spreadsheet, homebank,  printing, camera, scanning and CD/DVD support and even a softphone application!
Flash is not included but will automatically offer to download and install it as soon as you connect to the internet.  Though given that this is an XO-1, you are better off without it...
In general it feels faster than anything else I tried on the XO-1 so far (though seamonkey is on the "heavy" site), so if this is important to you, give it a spin Grin

It does has some tradeoffs though. Being a T2 build, does not have compatibility with any other major distro, thus the available applications are considerably more limited to, say, Ubuntu.
It also lacks a full udev version (with extras) since it does not compile on Racy/T2. So I had to resort to the XOpup-2.1 power management (that does not detect user activity as such, if from an external mouse/keyboard). But other than that everything works fine, including the camera.
I think is a handy and fast OS for the XO-1.

So I made a tarball of it that, like XOpup,
1) You download Racy5.2.2_XO.tar.gz (md5sum: 828d129d623b8dab5f08d5b5c477fe9b)
2) Expand at the root of any USB stick or SDcard
3) Put it on your unlocked XO-1 and power up
4) Connect using "Network wizard" (sorry, no Frisbee...)
5) Report any issues (I'll try some "polishing" if demand and issues)

This build is for XO-1 only and I made it since the automatic build system will not quite work with Puppy Racy. If you want any other puppy on your XO, just build it Wink

PS: For development, download and use the standard devx_racy_5.2.2.sfs.
The default urxvt terminal application does not work properly in the presence of the olpc-kbdshim keyboard daemon. Install lxterminal from the PPM if you intend to do some terminal work.

PPS: If you use the earlier 5.1.1 build, the Nov 23 5.2.2 build will update your save file and keep your data and settings.

Here is a picture of the latest puppylinux development offering: Saluki puppy.

Is based on puppy Racy but spots the XFCE desktop, panel and plugins (like the legendary teapot's ubuntu) and supports all the XO functions.
Currently early in development but at 62MB (without office and audio/video applications) looks promising  Wink

Tell me more tell me more, like does she have a car?

Saluki sounds intriguing.  Any progress on it?
When you say supports all XO functions does that include Screen rotation?
I like to rotate and use the game keys for navigation with ebooks.

What does Saluki mean?

Thanks Mavrothal

Saluki is (presumably) the fastest breed of dogs Wink
Saluki puppy is developing fast (check the link above) and is mod'ed to an XO version just fine with all XO functionality included.
Just entered beta stage so is a bit early for prime time builds.

Here is a bare-bones puppylinux Saluki. It comes with a modern XFCE4.6 desktop and all the core functions and libraries (check the control panel) but not much more!

It is based on the luki-010.iso and is modified to work on the XOs with the Pox_git tools.
Has power management, sound, screen rotation, full keyboard and gamekey functionality etc and works both with the XO-1 and the XO-1.5

At 50MB has no applications but you can download just what you need with the Puppy Package Manager. From the Midori browser to the LibreOffice.sfs. Additional bells and whistles for the XFCE4 desktop are also available as pets *.

Saluki is still in beta stage so it might be some bumps. Is better if you have some understanding of Puppylinux or you have used XOpup before on your XO.

To give it a spin just download Saluki_core-010_XO.tar.gz (md5sum: c23bf631cf237428fb915251ca340c6c)
Expand it at the root of any USB or SDcard with 250MB or more available space (no special formatting required, presence of other files is not a problem)
Transfer it in your security disabled XO, boot, and let us know what you think and how you customized your build  Grin

(*For a more bare-bones version, exit to prompt and start X with "xwin jwm". No desktop  Shocked and the Thunar file manager does not play well with JWM, but all applications do and is considerable faster. Experienced users only Wink )

Wouldn't LXDE be lighter weight?  I know there are many options I just thought since extreme streamline is goal I was curious as to choosing XFCE.

JWM is even lighter Wink but the developer decided to make a "modern" puppy and XFCE is the closer to that after the big dogs (gnome, KDE).
There is always the original Racy if you would prefer a lighter version. They both use the same base

im totally impressed by saluki, its like wished for + xfce.
most stuff is even running, when i open several windows at the same time - at the moment, gcc mplayer and audio are hardly working. maybe i find something.
i think, thats my first seriously interesting puppy.
multitasking on olpc...
  Cheesy
when reading on the forum there, i see gurus...
thx mavrothal for another great variant

Indeed the memory footprint particularly with JWM is very small. Just 65MB. It can even run fine without swap Grin

BTW I made JWM more user friendly in Saluki and when Saluki-013 will come out I'll probably release another XO build

As promised with the release of Puppylinux Saluki 013 I made an XO build suitable for both XO-1 and XO-1.5.

As the one before it does not include any applications. But you can get what you want after you connect and make a save file. I also included the saluki custom_builder 0.3, that allows easily to build an adrive sfs with the apps you want and will be automounted after reboot.

Although JWM is not officially included or supported in Saluki is present in XO builds and actually with improved functionality. I still find it faster than the standard XDCE4.8 desktop Saluki comes with. Again it is suggested for experienced users. Just exit tp prompt type "fixmenus" and then "xwin jwm" and you are on a JWM desktop environment. Go back with "xwin startxfce4".

Here is my JWM desktop after I added some applications

To give it a spin just download Saluki013_core_XO.tar.gz (md5sum: 3d59a9a34b1fa0682fafb944744c23aa)
Expand it at the root of any USB or SDcard with 250MB or more available space (no special formatting required, presence of other files is not a problem)
Transfer it in your security disabled XO, boot, and let us know what you think and how you customized your build

Thanks Mavrothal, I just got my OLPC back online after a power cable breakdown last year.  I think I'll give the latest Puppy a try.  Thanks for building it!

All my customizations to Teapot's Ubuntu will be hard to live without, though. I feel a bit unsure about giving up apt-get and .debs.  How limited is the software library for Puppy?

Yeh I know what you mean. I always keep a "stable"  build in mt XO that I know will work the way I expect when I need it (on the road).

Repo wise, Saluki is not Ubuntu by far. Though the developer responds to requests.
You may want to try the original XOpup that is Ubuntu 10.04 LTS compatible. Just remember that puppy package manager is not apt-get when it comes to dependencies...

The latest version of Puppylinux Racy 5.3 came out yesterday.
One major change is that is now fully internationalized and has language packages for Spanish, German, French, Russian and Polish
Just use the Puppy Package Managed to download and install the respective pet (search for "lang"), set your localization from the Desktop menu, reboot, and you are in the new language.

Thanks to the PupXOfy Cheesy build system an XO version is now available.
At 90 MB, the XO version comes with full keyboard, power management and camera support and all the standard puppy apps.

To install it download racy-5.3_XO.tar.gz (md5sum: dfceeeed60c9b180d3a8f2c7a6d05b59)
Expand it at the root of any USB or SDcard with 250MB or more available space (no special formatting required, presence of other files is not a problem as long as you do not have a bolder named "boot", "boot10" or "boot15" at the root of the device)
Transfer it in your security disabled XO and boot.

PS: Prefer "network wizard" over "simple network setup" to connect to the internet. SNS is still unreliable with the XO wifi. Setup is a bit more "laborious" with NW but more stable and power management aware.
PPS: For optimal voice/sound recording make sure you adjust your alsamixer for capture level and mic boost.
