XO 1 - video (mplayer, vlc) and VOIP questions

Hi, it's difficult to know where to get info as a lot of the posts are old, and a lot of even the official wikis refer to earlier builds.

I did, under build 656 many years ago, have Mplayer installed (somehow) and it worked great.

I have recently dusted off my laptop and updated to the latest build and I tried an avi file and an flv file, and neither played in the built-in player under gnome. I'd really like to get mplayer back on my xo, or vlc if it works.

Does anyone know of some up-to-date instructions for doing this that would work on build 10.1.3 or whatever it is (the latest build)? If so, could you point me in their direction?

The other thing is VOIP. I'd love to use the XO to voice chat with my girlfriend in China (phone calls are a bit expensive from the UK!) What is the easiest way to do this? I'm working on installing skype, but presently can't get online under Gnome. I was thinking about having a go with PuppyLinux for the XO (XOpup), but I'm worried there are going to be an endless series of snags and glitches if I try to install that, and I have no idea if VOIP can work in XOpup. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

One final thing. My touchpad is still sticky and jumpy after all these updates. Presumably that's a hardware problem then... ?

This should at least take care of the mplayer issue:

blinky,
Videos do not work in OLPC 11.1.3 or any other official build because the video/audio codecs are not included (not "free").
Anna's mplayer has the missing codecs in addition to the mplayer and is an excellent solution.

Alternatively you can just download the codecs from rpmfusion by typing in terminal:
Code:
su
umount /var/cache/yum
rpm -Uvh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release.rpm
rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/releases/11/Everything/i386/os/rpmfusion-free-release-11-1.noarch.rpm
rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/releases/11/Everything/i386/os/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-11-1.noarch.rpm
yum install gstreamer-plugins-ugly gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-ffmpeg

Or after you instal rpmfusion repositories,  just "yum install vlc" instead of the plugins.

Skype (v2.0.0.72. NOT the latest) works in OLPC 10.1.3 but only for audio. It crashes on video. However the quality is not very good. Unfortunately I have no idea where you can find v2.0.0.72 anymore (anyone ??).
Skype also requires Qt but if you install VLC you'll also get Qt.
In XOpup Skype works ok for audio and video and installation is very simple, but again the quality is not very good. A headset can help a bit in either case.

The touchpad issue is likely here to stay  Cry

Thanks guys for your help.

I've installed xopup, and it's great so far.

I will get round to installing vlc or mplayer using your advice.

I got skype working in xopup but on a voice call I could hear my mum talking very well but she couldn't hear me. I tried all three options in the skype options mic settings. However I installed it in a weird way (first downloaded it on a windows computer, then extracted it, then copied it to the xo, then installed xopup, then browsed to the nand download folder where I'd put skype and double clicked it. It ran ok, but it was a bit roundabout. I will try the installer in XOpup to install skype properly and see if that helps.

Just out of interest, when XOpup runs on a usb stick, is the usb working like a cpu, doing all the 'computing' on the usb, so that the card in the xo is practically inactive? If that's right, that's very cool.

If I try to use quickpet to install skype, it says I must install puppy first. What does this mean?

If I try to install vlc, it says I only have 40 Mb left, but my usb stick has over a gig free.

Blinky,
the above 2 posts belong to the XOpup thread or may be a thread of its own, but not here.
So I will not answer them here (all I can say here is that the skype installation is rather unique  Grin)
It makes it easier for people that are looking for answers to keep each thread  on its subject and avoid unnecessary repetitive answers Wink
