Darius,

I totally missed this posting for some reason...  Probably got too excited...

How can we unite this LA thread into one?  I don't see any delete option...

Beats me. I'm new to this forum, too.

I'm interested in setting up a monthly meeting, but it might be good to wait a bit and see who else is interested and what would be convenient for the most of them.

Well LAX is sometimes my airport Smiley

I'm actually up in Ventura County and won't be getting my XO until January, but LA used to be my old stomping grounds and I still visit occasionally. Hello Smiley

Alright, I removed my LA post...

I think I accidently reported Darius to Wayan to remove his post thinking I was asking to remove the entire topic -_-... I am such a clumsy man...

Sorry Darious (x2)

Alright, all you LA peeps unite here!

Like I was saying, Maybe we can meet once every month (or every two months) and have this forum going for communicating in between.  Let's have the best user group!!!

Count me SO in....however I should warn I have no programing experience since Basic in the Apple 2e labs in elementary. Kinda the whole point of me wanting a machine that runs an open source platform. Just be forewarned, I bring nothing but enthusiasm and impeccable charm.

Hurrah! Basic on the Apple was my first exposure to programming, too. That's the kind of thing that intrigues me about the XO -- it's the first computer in a long time that looks to feel fun and creative like that.

Oh my goodness...

Basic...  Apple IIe...

Both my first computer experience...  I remember learning to do simple math problems and making cursors move and stuff...

All forgotten now ofcourse...

At that time I was puzzled as to how learning any of this kinda stuff would help me make games?

I'm in Westwood and I too learned BASIC on the Apple ][+ and the Apple //e Smiley

I'm kind of a gear-head and an amateur hacker (hardware, not software) and programming kinda scares me, but I like being scared.  I wanted the XO because it fits my semi-anti-corporate leanings.  I think a non-profit gadget company that specializes in putting educational materials in 3rd World kids' hands provides some much needed balance to the mega-corporations that seem to only care for profits (not that I'm against profits--but how much??).  I think everyone in the western world should support OLPC and I'm proud to do so, myself.  The fact that we get to end up with XOs is icing on the cake--well, really it's more like a whole second cake Smiley

I'm a writer and a blogger (not always mutually exclusive!) and will be using my XO for writing, blogging, research, a bit of communications, and hopefully drawing attention to the OLPC cause.

I'm VERY excited to be involved in this and look forward to meeting all of you.  I'm up for monthly or even weekly meetings, but I understand weekly might be too much.  I'm sure we all have lives.  Smiley

I'm in Westlake Village. Right on the border of LA and Ventura county. I'm up for bimonthly meetings.

Welcome!

I was just looking into setting up a shared blog for our group-to-be, and created http://laxoe.wordpress.com/, but it doesn't seem to provide any way to share ownership (besides giving out the single username/password). Any better suggestions? Blogspot, I guess?

thepete, that's cool -- I hack software and I'd like to learn a bit more about making hardware. You might enjoy the Open Firmware Forth and the Squeak Etoys -- they're both kind of hardwarey in different ways.

Darius,

I'd suggest a WordPress install.  If you want it easy-like, try http://wordpress.com/ but I would always be geeky and host it myself.

Darius, short of hosting a WP multi-user blog (which I don't recommend--I use regular WP for my own blog and hate it) I'd say Blogger is the best way to allow multiple bloggers to update a single blog.  I recommend we go with laxo.blogspot.com if it's available. Smiley

LAXO is such a cool acronym--it would make a great name for some weird kind of mascot or a creature from a Dr. Seuss book. Smiley

Anyway, great to see so many fellow Angelenos interested in this!  I hope we can find more.

Hey, Wayan!  This thread is for *SoCal* people--go back to DC with you!!
