Yesterday I put os20 on the xo-1 using "sudo olpc-update 11.2.0_xo1-20".

A few minor glitches in the process:

1) took a while to realize that the filename 11.2.0_xo1-XX did not have the letter "l" in it and that the "l" was supposed to be a "1".

2) the download is a lengthy process even on a reasonably fast connection and after an hour I was wondering if the the file was still downloading. Some indication of download progress would be helpful.

3) after downloading for some time the download was aborted because there was no space left in memory. Why doesn't the "olpc-update" program check the filesize and the space left on the machine before downloading the file and using up the available memory and my bandwidth?

4) to get some space I removed Wikipedea and tried the download again. First thing it did was to delete the previous download (grrr.) but then it began downloading again and this time had sufficient room for the file and the install was successful.

5) system booted into sugar. good. switched into gnome. Better than expected. Thinking that moving /home to the SDcard and adding swap a few lightweight programs will make this a nice rugged outdoor computer. Shutdown the computer. Rebooted again.

6) On this reboot the computer does not reboot. It tells me:

   OlPC C2, 256 MiB memory installed, S/N SHF80800457
   OpenFirmware CL1    Q2E45  Q2E  EC  Firmware PQ2E35

   Trying int:\security\develop.sig

   Scan for: school-mesh-1 not found
   Scan for: school-mesh-2 not found
   <buffer@ff83b080>:0:
   Can't open boot device

   Type 'help' for more information.

   ok

7) I typed help and used it as far as I could. Am now about to google for possibilities to try, though will watch here for suggestions or solutions. Tx.

Yesterday I put os20 on the xo-1 using "sudo olpc-update 11.2.0_xo1-20".

"olpc-update" from a previous F9/F11 build I think is not recommended/tested for F14 builds (though it is in the wiki page Undecided ).
Actually I am a bit surprised that it did work, since the F14 builds are using a 2 partition boot, and earlier ones a single partition.
I think at the first os20 boot the system configured itself for the 2 partition boot and on the next boot it was just not there.

I would suggest to first disable security at this stage since your developer key is readable and the clean install os20 from the "ok" OFW prompt
Just remember that the command is "update-nand u:\os20.onu"

However, I have no evidence that is any slower or more resource demanding than F11 builds.
I actually have an XO-1 with os860 and one with os20 and I can run them side by side.

OK here are 2 videos of the XO-1s running os860 and os20. The XOs have no SDcards swap or overclocking.
This video shows boot time while
this one shows opening browse and loading a page

Next month (flickr has 2 videos/month limit) I'll have a couple of activities that are actually just bit slower but mostly because the newer versions in os20 are "heavier"

Thank you very much for your reply mavrothal.

I downloaded the os20.onu and os20.uim files to a usbkey.
My memory of the process is not exact.
Re-reading your instructions I now note that I did not disable security.
The command "update-nand u:\os20.onu did not work. I do not remember what I used to get the install going, but once it got going I again went into gnome. Connected to the net.
Typed in $ yum install usermode. Yum connected to the repositories, eventually failed due to insufficient space. df -h was telling me that I had over 120M free.
Shutdown computer. Pressed the power button. It failed to boot.

OK. Tried to get the OK prompt. All methods that I tried failed.
Tried to boot using TC on usbstick -> no joy, got powering off in 30 seconds.
Tried to boot using DebXO on SD card -> no joy, got powering off in 30 seconds.

The closest that I got to an OK prompt gave the following:

    OlPC C2, 256 MiB memory installed, S/N SHF80800457
    OpenFirmware CL1    Q2E45  Q2E  EC  Firmware PQ2E35

    Trying ext:\security\develop.sig
    Trying ext:\boot\bootfw.zip
    Trying ext:\boot\fw.zip
    Trying int:\security\develop.sig
FW found - current FW is up-to-date
    Trying int:\boot\rumos.zip
    Boot failed
    OlPC C2, 256 MiB memory installed, S/N SHF80800457
    OpenFirmware CL1    Q2E45  Q2E  EC  Firmware PQ2E35
Use power button to power off

Help! How to proceed from here?  Tx.

The command "update-nand u:\os20.onu did not work.

Try this
First clean install an official build
Then get your developer key and inactivate security.
Then get os20 files and install from the "ok" OFW prompt by "update-nand u:\os20.onu".
It should NOT fail unless you have a hardware problem (to test keep pressing the rocker key left during powerup) or the files are not OK (re-download)

Just in case, to get to the ok OFW prompt keep tapping fast the Esc-key (the one with (X) ) immediately after powerup

That worked really well! Very much appreciated.

I will set F14 up further in a few days when there is more time. Will try to put /var and /tmp on the SDcard with /home and /swp, and then will hope that enough space remains in the internal memory for the programs to be added.

Am getting curious whether LVM can be used to get around the 1G space restriction for /usr and will read up on that later. I had originally thought to put /usr on the SDcard but from reading the fedora documentation it is best to leave /usr with /.

Planning to use fluxbox as the window manager so that the mouse does not need to be used so much. Would anyone know if numbered links can be added to firefox? Or if there is a decent browser that has numbered links? The only one that I know of currently is xxxterm which is still abit rough. Numbered links make using a laptop with a bad mouse pad much more enjoyable.

Right on schedule, the OLPC-10.2.0 release-candidate build os870 is out.
This means that you do not need a developer-key to install it or deactivate security.
Just follow the standard installation instructions to clean install it (backup any data you want to keep).

You could also use "sudo olpc-update candidate-870" to update from os860 and preserve your journal data but be warned that you need at least 450MB free space in your NAND to do that.
You could delete /home/olpc/Library/* and most of the /home/olpc/Activilies to generate the required space. After reboot the first screen will suggest to update your activities and all will be downloaded to the latest version.

The good news about os870 is that is considerably smaller than the os1-23 OLPC-11.2.0 development builds so there is sufficient space left in the NAND. Is still 70MB bigger than OLPC-10.1.3, os860 but you cen easily get rid of 60-some MB as described above

So now Fedora-14/Sugar-0.92 is for everyone to enjoy.
I runs fine though there are still some issues that will be hopefully be resolved by the "final" version

Given that yum works fine all the current F14 applications are ready to install without jumping ropes :-) and if you think that some swap is needed that is also simple to have

As usually in OLPC builds "non-free" video/audio codecs are missing so most audio/video files will not play, but is simple to fix. Just open the terminal and type
Code:
sudo yum localinstall --nogpgcheck \
http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm \
http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm
#the above is _one_ big line
sudo yum install gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-ugly gstreamer-ffmpeg

For the rest try Autoplus+ while in the Gnome desktop.

Mav--

Though the size is still a bit large, I figured it was time for another try of 11.2.0

After a clean install via USB, I re-downloaded and installed my developer key, then followed the instructions you offer above for slimming things down.  No dice:  I created the delete_unused.sh file, stored it on the desktop, and ran the first two commands in a terminal without difficulty.  When I ran the third command, though, the screen filled with messages that I did not have the authority to proceed, something about a "pristine build."  After filling 20 screens of this message, it proceded to ask me if I wanted to try to overwrite a file, then another, and another, and it appeared that I was going to have to respond for 20 screens worth.  Stuck in a nearly infinite loop, I closed the terminal session down.

Rather than freeing up memory, my available storage dropped from 327 to 324 MB.

Have your instructions been overtaken by recent build changes?  Alternately, did I miss doing something to have the permissions I need to follow your advice?

Kim,
I do not know what you did, but I repeated the whole process re-flashing my XO with os873 and running the script and I got no errors. 61MB freed and the overall free space in the card is 396MB!
I did that from the sugar terminal but I do not think this is relevant.

Is there any chance that you are using an old version of the script?
You should use version 7
Since the start of the candidate releases the file system moved back to jffs2 and the old script does not work. I have updated it a couple of weeks now. Use the latest!
You do NOT need to re-flash your XO. Just run v7 of the script.

Second try worked, though I'm not at all clear why, slimmed it down 64 MB.

So I "sudo yum install usermode" without difficulty, and then followed your link called FedoraPlus (which seems to have changed to AutoPlus ??!!?) and I entered the command there to install it in the terminal.

It eventually reported that it installed, but provides no instructions as to how to use it, only shows a sample screen.  In the trial and error mode that perhaps folks in the strange world of Linux think clever, I typed "autoplus" in the terminal and it gave me:

[olpc@xo-0d-49-c5 ~]$ autoplus
logname: no login name

and a blank line, then I saw some life in the keyhole LED in the screen bezel, then...nothing.  No screen, no second activity running when I call up the frame to see what's behind the terminal window.  I let it sit for five minutes or more of inactivity, than gave up and closed the terminal.

So doing revealed the screen from the autoplus website, so I tried installing the mp3 codecs and it...seemed to do nothing, no indication of activity whatsoever, no flurry of downloading or anything else I could see.  Did it work?  How can I tell?  Sure didn't confirm installing anything, so I doubt it.

What now (he asks, exasperated...)?

Is strange how little details can make a big difference...  Shocked

Autoplus does not work under Sugar (updated the posts.thx) because of the Sugar's security system that does not allow one app to open another. Not true! see 2 posts below.

Just switch to Gnome and you'll see both the Autoplus+  desktop icon and a menu entry under and Applications->System Tools, waiting for you!
No instructions. Just click Wink

Boy howdy, autoplus sure doesn't work under Sugar!!!

In fact today Browse ground to a halt, unable even to finish rendering the Google web serch home page...so I closed it, opened Terminal, and tried firefox from the command line, with the same result.  I'm traveling and this is my only computer for a few days, so I couldn't see your response.

Left to my own devices, I reopened the terminal, typed "sudo yum erase autoplus", rebooted once it completed, and things work fine again.

So now I have more questions:  will installing autoplus from the linux desktop still prevent me from using Browse via Sugar?!!?  If so it's useless to me; I also tried to open Record after closing Browse and that didn't work either.  As much as I'd like an easy way to add codecs and the like, it's not worth trading away the functionality of a Sugar laptop.

Please advise...

Kim,
as I said little details can make a big difference Roll Eyes, and in this case you browse/record issues have nothing to do with autoplus!
Actually autoplus is just a bash script (like the one that removes the "unneeded" files from Sugar) that runs specific yum commands  for you. That all it does!

Autoplus does not harm Sugar in anyway. Even when you try to run it from sugar!
Actually if you try to install something with autoplus under sugar it does try (and works!).
So it runs yum in the background, and when yum is running on the XO-1 all other applications are struggling, as you know. Thus I suspect your Browse/Record "problems".
If you leave it long enough to finish it comes back and says  that "operation  failed", but actually it has worked!!!
I just installed flash plugin with autoplus from Sugar and then checked with yum that reported that flash is installed and latest version and indeed flash "works" (the way it always "worked" on the XO-1...)

So I have to revise my previous statement about Autoplus and Sugar: Shocked
Autoplus does run under Sugar if you start it from the terminal! It is only that you have to close terminal to see the interface and is not informative at all while is working in the background!
So better use it from gnome Grin

Sorry if this is a dumb question but  now that July 18 has come I was wondering if there was going to be a formal announcement of the 11.2 release and a new "stable" build.

I want to upgrade my XO-1 and give it back to my son with as little downtime as possible so if there is going to be something newer and improved over 873 released imminently I will wait, but if not I will just bite the bullet now.
