where's my disk space gone?

Out of a total of 1GB, "df" sez I used 874 MB, 151MB free.  "du" sez Library: 73MB, Activities, 204MB.  So where did I use the other 597 MB?  And how do you get to the top of a Terminal "window" when the list is so long that the scrollbar stops before you get to the top?

I haven't lost nearly that much, but I too have lost some space and am wondering where it went. Any suggestions?
