You better check with the olpc server mailing list
http://lists.laptop.org/listinfo/server-devel

XO-1: Is never going to run Flash, but is certainly flashy!
(If you want Flash, get an XO-1.5 running OLPC 11.2.0 or XOpup Grin )

Start with:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/XS_Techniques_and_Configuration as well as the installation instructions.

If the references therein do not help, then search server-devel list per mavrothal post, but that can get tedious.

If you're installing a GUI on the XS thinking it's going to make administration easier, it's not.  And it's a very bad idea.

The only possible reason I can think of for Gnome on the XS would be if it was the only computer I had access to and I needed a desktop.  And then only startx as a regular user - NEVER as root.
