Rao,
I'm using XOpup almost exclusively from a stick.
Everything looks OK in your stick but just in case also try "ls -al" to check for any hidden files.
I assumed that your firmware is q2e45 right? (check the sugar "settings-> about my XO")
Try to power-up with the "check" gamekey pressed to bypass pretty boot and see what OFW says. Is it really reading the "u:\boot\olpc.fth"?
Finally remove any SDcard if install (though souldn't make a difference)

The fact you do not get to the OFW prompt is very suspicious....

Quote
In its standard configuration there is no way the XOpup-v4 to boot sugar, because its olpc.fth does not "see" the internal NAND at all.
This is wrong! in the standard XOpup-v4 configuration if you have the "O" game key pressed the XO will boot from the NAND if you run an F11 build (like os852) but should not give the "pretty boot" with the dot animation. Just the running console.

==================================

The firmware is q2E45.
Non-pretty boot seems OK for the most part except for the following two messages (as far as I could catch) from the  fast scrolling output,

1. Firmware does not seem to support PS mode

2. libertas:  PREP-CMD failed ....

It seems libertas has something to do with wifi.    But the wifi works well both when I use OS852 and Teapot's Ubuntu.    Even the USB ports work well in both cases.

I still can't get to the OFW OK prompt by powering up with the CHECK game key pressed, releasing the game key  (when prompted) while repeatedly pressing the ESC key.   It straight boots OS 852 (with no SD card in place).

HOWEVER,  with the SD card (containing Teapot's Ubuntu) in place the procedure does give me the OFW OK prompt!   Then I plugged in the USB stick
and ran the command,
dir u:\boot

This showed the files  in the boot directory correctly.

Next I ran the command,

boot u:\boot\olpc.fth

Lo and behold, this did boot up Puppy Linux!

Now, you have to make sense of all this and explain (please do) to me!
This answers my question about boot flag (it is not required).

Did you say that Puppy Linux doesn't use any of XO-1 OS852  software when it runs?

Do you want me to try any experiments to help you understand?

thanks,

Rao

I do not have os852 in my XO-1 right now so I can not tell if this behavior of the <Esc> key is related but I would doubt it. Do you get to the ok prompt with the <Esc> key when nothing is attached to the XO-1?

Indeed the XOpup has nothing to do with the NAND os or the card or the boot flag.

If you really want to try something, try another USB key. Even an old 250MB should do.

awaistoor,
are you saying you booted XOpup in a locked XO-1 Huh Huh

wat do u mean by LOCKED XO-1??  Huh

I believe that means that to run any OS other than  official/signed from OLPC, one has to obtain developer key (a file) from OLPC and place it in the directory /security.   Also, at the OK prompt which you get by repeatedly pressing  the ESC key (top left) when powering up the XO one has to run the command disable-security.

That is my understanding.
oh ok .. well i haved unlocked my XO ... i have obtained developer key n u know wat im using puppy n everythin running fine now Wink (but still having that mouse prob) n btw thanx for helpin every1 Smiley

Which XOpup version are you using?
Does you XO-1 has the 3 segment touchpad or the or the newer, one segment that makes a slight dip in? (This is important pls let me know).
In any case try Menu->Shutdown->exit to prompt and type
Code:
modprobe psmouse
xwin
If this fixes it add the "modprobe psmouse" line under the "modprobe mousedev" line in /etc/rc.d/rc.local
Also let us know so I can apply it in the next build (I do not have a second generation XO-1 to test)

It seems that the reason I could not boot Puppy Linux with only a USB stick (containing the boot folder and the files vmlinuz, lupu-510.sfs, initrd.gz)  but was able to boot Puppy Linux with a SD card containing Teapot's Ubuntu was that the USB stick didn't have the security folder containing the develop.sig.
Once I created the security folder (in the root directory of the USB stick) and copied the develop.sig file into it  (the SD card has these), I was able to boot Puppy Linux with only the USB stick plugged in.

Mavrothal's first post in this thread did say that one needs the developer's key but not the above.  Simple-minded folks like me  can't infer the hidden intent!   After I gave the same piece of advice to Awaistoor,  I thought I should try it myself!

Puppy Linux has the potential, with some tweaks (which may really be only a matter of learning to use it on my part),  to completely satisfy this 72 year old's surfing needs.

thanks all,

Rao

Mavrothal's first post in this thread did say that one needs the developer's key but not the above.  Simple-minded folks like me  can't infer the hidden intent!

In this case there is no hiddn intent Shocked
The instructions clearly say
Quote
Attention 4 You need to have a developer key and permanently inactivate security at the OFW prompt, to run unofficial/unsigned/development builds, as this one.

The: "and permanently inactivate security" part takes care of the need for a developer key once and for all. Once you inactivate security in your XO-1 you never need a security key again for anything, but only to reactivate security.

However, between the original post and today (actually on the 16th) someone changed the olpc wiki page!!! The given section is still there (Disabling the security system)  but the given link was not working. I updated the link to the current version of the wiki.

Thank you for bringing this up as well as the alternative option.

Did the mouse/touchpad worked when you came back to X? If it did you must add this command to the rc.local by editing the file, so every time you start the machine will be executed. Is not added automatically.
What you did in the console was just a test to see if it is going to fix (temporarily) your mouse problem. Did it?

BK's SNS is pretty unreliable on XOpup. In contrast net-setup.sh is robust. You must hit "use this profile" after you "save this profile" to connect and then click "Auto DHCP" on the next window. Is pretty "wordy" to connect the first time (17 clicks total!) but it works very reliably and totally automatically after that.
Change /usr/local/bin/defaultconnect from "sns" to "connectwizard" and start over

Unfortunately luvcview is not working.
Other cam apps like Skype do. You can also try anna's suggestion with mplayer described here

You can rum "mkswap-file.sh" at any time. Will take some time. You need to reboot to take effect and of course do not delete the "pupswap.psw" file that will be generated Smiley

Well... if it says it, means you have it  Grin
If you never deleted the old swap file is still used.
Just type "free" in the terminal to make sure that you have swap.

pnethood is a tool equivalent to M$ neighborhood, eg sharing between computers. Have a windows machine with sharing on and check it out. I never used it... Wink
