XO-1 as dedicated ereader

A couple of days ago I pulled out my G1G1 XO  after about 2 years of collecting dust. I decided to customize the device as a dedicated(ish) ereader.

Here are some screenshots:

Its basically gnome panel with openbox as the window manager coupled with fbreader. Its configured to look for ebooks on external media automounted to /media

I have attempted to make a script to reproduce this configuration, I haven't really tested it so I make no guarantees about its functioning.

I built this using os850, but any of the fc11 builds should work.
I recommend creating a swap partition on external media and mounting /var/cache/yum and /var/tmp (copy contents first) to a usb drive or sdcard before running the script (or before using yum in general).

untar the file and run ./reader.sh and if you're lucky and I did everything correctly it may work.

Click on says "sendspce" is not available. Where does this method stand now in 2011? I have a few XO-1 systems reflashed to the current stable version. In July we anticipate travel to Kenya where there are a hundred XO-1 systems at a Primary school where e-Reader functionality would be a great boon. We are in Burke/Fairfax, VA

In case it helps, I am using the XO as an eReader by using Sugar’s Read activity.

I have one SD Card full of eBooks, most of them in ePub and a few in PDF format, and when I start the XO on Sugar, all I do is press the Activity view key (the white square inside the black circle) or alt tab to switch to the Journal, click on the SD Card and start typing the name of the author or book, and the list of eBooks gets filtered until I find the one I want, then click on it and it opens in the Read activity.

I particularly like the ePub format, because Read shows the text big and clear, and the game buttons (O,X) move you exactly to the next ‘page’ on the screen without missing a line, and (Square,Check) zoom in and out nicely.

BTW, there are lots of great free eBooks at http://www.epubbooks.com.

Cheers.

Sugar Labs has a electronic book reader called JAMCalibre 2.  Tried installing on build 874 ( 11.2) with sugar 0.92.2.  Wouldn't start.  Developer has made 10 other activities, JAMCalibre was updated 2 days ago, maybe it's a work in progress.

Developer's home page  https://sites.google.com/site/sugaractivities/home

Calibre is an ebook reader and converter that runs on Linux, but have no idea if they are related.
