You download it from the link (the .img and .crc files) and follow the instructions in the dextrose page Shocked or try the instructions here

Yes. Yum is a problem in these builds  Sad Try this (at least the swap)

After your assurance, I installed OS850 on one  XO-1 and Teapot's Ubuntu works well.

However,  I  updated another XO-1 to OS852 but Teapot's Ubuntu doesn't boot on that XO-1!

Actually, I created another SD card with Teapot's Ubuntu (using the dd command).  Both SD cards work well with my XO-1 running OS850.  But on the XO-1 running OS852 neither SD card works even with the appropriate  develop.sig file and security disabled.

On the XO-1 with OS850, at the start of the boot process the SD card is displayed unlocked.  On the other XO-1 the SD card is not displayed at all.  When I try to manually boot by typing (at OK prompt)
boot sd:\boot\olpc.fth

the  message "Can't open boot device"
is diplayed.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Rao

Rao,

I have OS 850, and I have no problem booting Teapot's Ubuntu on an SD card.  You might note what Open Firmware (OFW) you are using and write it down (type in terminal "cat /ofw/openprom/model" to get that info).  You can always re-install the older OFW if you have a problem (but you need the newer OFW for OS 850).  I don't think you will have any problem though.

If you do go to OS 850, I suggest adding a swap partition or file as you are setting it up because to add programs from the repositories you will need to use "yum", and it soaks up a lot of memory.  In the past week there have been several good posts about setting them up.  Even though my OS 850 is on the NAND, when I use "yum" to add a new program or file, I activate a swap partition on my SD card with "swapon /dev/mmcblk0p2".

At the suggestion of others I have added midori as a browser, and it seems light and responsive.

Is the firmware updated to q2e45 eg was it plugged on first reboot ?
Does this XO boots from the specific  SDcard if it runs an older os (850 or 802)?
XOs are notorious for handling SDcards, and as your message shows, it does not see the SDcard at all, so I do not think has to do with os852.
Run a "test-all" at the OFW "ok" prompt and see if you get any warnings about the SDcard slot.

There are a number of problems with SD cards & booting if you have a look at the dev.laptop.org bug listing.

I have the opposite problem.  I can boot to the SD card but can't get to Sugar unless I remove the SD card.  The gamepad "O" key hardware override to boot Sugar when SD is inserted doesn't work. http://dev.laptop.org/ticket/10307

I've also noted the Sugar/Fedora update process on 10.1.2 hangs.  It was posted as a bug but no idea where it is in the repair process.

If we are talking about teapot's Ubuntu on the SDcard, you need to change the olpc.fth a bit.
Try this one

On the problem XO-1  clicking on My Setting->My Computer gives

Build: 852
Sugar: 0.84.16
Firmware: Q2E45
Wireless Firmware: 5.110.22.p23

Before the OK prompt the following appears on the screen,

OLPC C2, 256K MiB memory installed, S/N SHF808000B7
OpenFirmware CL1 Q2E45 Q2E  EC  Firmware PQ2E35

I don't remember whether I had the USB card (with OS852.img and
fs.zip) plugged in at reboot during installation of OS852.

Also,  on the problem XO-1 (when I had OS802 on it (I never installed
OS850 on this XO-1)) I was able to boot Teapot's Ubuntu using the
older SD card.

Even with OS852, at the OK prompt I can use the dir command to list
the contents of any directory on the newer SD card and after OS852 boots I
can insert the SD card and check the contents without any problem

The results of test-all, on the problem XO-1, showed the following problems

1   Five bad blocks in NAND

2   the SD  card test was inconsistent sometimes OKAY, sometimes
"self-test failed."   However, the command dir (at the OK prompt)
listed the contents of the directories without any problem.   Also, I
could explore the SD card and open files in it with OS852 booted up.

But after a while even OS852 failed to  boot.  But again this morning I was able boot OS852 (twice) and explore the SD card. If I let it boot OS852 normally
I don't see any error messages but if boot by typing "boot nand:\boot\olpc.fth at the OK prompt, I see the following error message 5 times one after another,

...  USB cmd response error message (2)

But otherwise it still boots and I can  explore the  SD card without any problem.

i would like to downgrade/downdate the OS to os850 and firmware  or
earlier (OS802).  Could you please let me know where I can find  the
instructions.

I had a Paraguay version of OS on the problem XO-1 before updating to OS852.

By the way I installed OS852 also on my other XO-1 (I think I had OS802 and then OS850 on this before updating to OS852) and Teapot's Ubuntu runs fine on that machine.

It could be that the earlier Parguay OS is causing problems on the problem XO-1.  That is why  I am considering a clean-install to an earlier OS.

I hope I answered all your questions.

thanks,

Rao

Rao,
looks like a messy case.  Sad
When I had similar problems at some point in the past, what "fixed" it was to remove any over-clocking (just in case you have one), remove powerplug and battery for a couple of minutes to reset the EC, put it back and boot.
Now is OK again with over-clock.

I thought I should post this just in case somebody else has similar problem.

On the problem XO-1 (OS852 installed; test-all, at the OK prompt, fails the SD card test; I was not convinced of the test result) I installed Teapot's Ubuntu (Intrepid) starting from scratch.  The Intrepid OS boots and runs without any problem.
I am inclined to think that something is wrong with test-all.

Could anyone tell me which version of the OLPC custom linux kernel is being used in this build? I'm installing Ubuntu 10.04 onto the SD card of my XO according to these instructions[0], and I've been successful, except that the wireless has been extremely unstable. The wireless has been solid in Build 850, so I thought I would try to use its kernel.

If anyone knows the answer to this, I'd greatly appreciate it if you could tell me.

Thanks,

Jake

All the 3.6.31-derived and  build kernels for XO-1 are here http://dev.laptop.org/~kernels/olpc-2.6.31/
To see which one a build uses check the packages file of the builds. For os850 is here http://build.laptop.org/10.1.2/xo-1/os850/os850.packages.txt
You can also rsync your kernel directly. Try
Code:
rsync --list-only rsync://updates.laptop.org
and dive down the tree to see what you want, and
Code:
rsync -archive -checksum
to actually get it.

So... where is this Ubuntu build?... Wink
