DHCP assigning.

Hi
I'm trying to connect to a wireless network & am having problems. It's saying it's connected,  and I can browse some (local) pages, but it won't find the page that lets me login to the campus network & go off campus.

In theory, as soon as I try to go to an off campus page, it should redirect to the login page; and that's what it does on other machines. (Windows/ Linux)

I've tried copying in the URL of the login page, but that's not working either.

Local support have suggested that it's related to the DHCP - and that seems to be the case. Hovering over the connection it's saying that the IP address starts with 10; yet they're all meant to be starting with 148.; so, someone's suggested I need to get into the terminal & make sure that it's set so that it picks up an IP address, rather than trying to assign it itself (it used to connect to the uni network without any problems ... but I've not tried for a while & have an idea that I updated the software [at home!] between trying to connect at the Uni. )

So, what's the command that I need to enter in the terminal to see if it's trying to assign IP addresses itself &, if so. what I need to enter to stop it doing so??

Thanks for your help.

I don't have an answer, but offer a few comments that may be helpful.

The XO will by default use DHCP to obtain an IP address from upline equipment and the wireless access point may supply the address.  For home networks, this will begin with a "private" range of 192.  A range of 10. is another "private" range and may be assigned by your access point.  Your XO barks "feed me" and some upline component "feeds it" an IP address, the intenet gateway address, and a domain name server address. The same happens with a directly connected PC, but a wireless connection may report the local "private" address.  Several users can have the same external IP address (that of the wireless access point, for example), but have unique "private" addresses.

You can also turn off the use of DHCP by the XO and assign an IP address (see iwconfig below), but you had better be authorized to use such an address (conflicts).

Is your XO connecting to someone else's local network ?

Have you tried "discarding network history" in Control Panel / Network?

Will the XO connect (automatically) to one (as defined by the "mesh server" in the Control Panel / Network) of the Jabber servers off-campus?

Edit

The linux tools for wireless are in /sbin and begin with iw*  .    Use the -help option to see what each can do.  Note that not all these tools work on the XO.

Hi
Sorry I didn't get back to you soooner - we had quite a few snow closures last week & the OLPC was at work & I at home!

However, for some reason it seems to have fixed itself. It's now picking up the login page on campus with no problems, just as it did the first time. (Personally, I think that they must have done something to the registration page ...- as I've done nothing to my OLPC before or after it stopped working.

As it was something you only have to fill in if you've logged in within the month, then I suspect that no-one else was grumbling at the end of term!
