Has anyone printed from the new Sugar/Gnome OS (any version)?

I am using os180py.

The drop-down menus in Applications & Systems do not seem to have any printing options;  I have added CUPS to the system via YUM, but CUPS is difficult/impossible to reach using "http://localhost:631/" in Firefox it gives "Error 404 Not Found".

Trying "http://localhost:631/Admin" I was able to migrate to "Add Printers" and sort of stumble thru a process; my printer was recognized (I had added a .ppd file to /etc/cups/ppc/), and it sort of "looked" like a printer had been added, but the system would not print a test page.

And then going to Abiword and Gedit and trying to print a testfile, no printers are recognized and "Print to File" is the only option.

Has anyone been successful in this?

Yesterday I tried to install os16, but I got "boot failed" message (similar to this one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/curiouslee/4795024880/) and I was not able to get ok prompt or to boot from sd card.

So I did a clean install (four game keys) of the last official release, and I tried to flash in a newer image again, this time os300py. And again boot failed, but this time booting with check key gave a message indicating that boot failed because of unsigned image (I don't remember exact wording). I inserted usb stick with /security/develop.sig and the new image booted.

Maybe that's obvious that after reflashing I need external media with developer key, but it took me a lot of time to figure this out.

I only played with the new image for a while. Switching to Gnome is nice, but Fedora/Gnome is not working well with 256MB RAM. I installed a few packages with yum (pity there is no mplayer in repository). After this /var/tmp was full and some programs crashed. I cleared it manualy, but Totem was still not working because of not enough memory. I noticed in-memory partition created for yum (the mounting point had 'yum' in it) and after I unmounted it manually I manged to play movie with Totem.

My first impression is that LXDE is working better on XO-1.

(pity there is no mplayer in repository).

For Mplayer, VLC, video/audio codecs etc, you need to include the RPMfusion repository.
Just type
Code:
su -c 'rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm'
and then run yum.

Has anyone installed the Google Chrome Browser on this OS?  I tried several times without suceess.  I have previously installed the Chrome Browser on other OS's for the XO.  I got it to work fine on Teapot's Ubuntu, DebXO, and even on TinyCore, but I can't get it to work on this OS.

Here is an interesting addition to the "Best image" saga.
OLPC released os302 for both XO-1 and XO-1.5. Nothing major there but os302 can be installed by "olpc-update" in an XO-1 running the last official Sugar 8.2.1 (os767/os802)!
So you can test F11/os302 without messing up your data and always go back to F9/os802 if you do not like it!!!
In a terminal just type
Code:
su
olpc-update 10.1.2_xo1-302

There are some caveats though.
You need to have at least 300MB free space for the new build to install on the top of os767/802 (and then you'll be left with too little space, so 400MB or more is recommended)
Is likely that some of your activities will not work correctly. You can always update them through software update to a working version but if you need to go back to os767/802 you'll need to delete them and install the old ones.
Also your journal will be updated to a version not compatible to os767/802. You can also remedy that when you go back by deleting the journal index (not the data) and rebuilding it.
But I would suggest before you do any update just backup your nand first to a USB stick so you can always go to the original state.

Pls report success or failure, preferably to the fedora-olpc list or the the olpc developer list or send an e-mail to "  help AT laptop DOT org  "

"You seem to be attempting to download an unsigned development build, but you do not have a developer key.  This will probably fail."

Love the optimism Smiley  I do have/had a developer key but it must not have survived the last time I installed new Sugar.

So far it is maerrily chugging away "- Performing incremental rsync."

We will see.

I believe security is already disabled on both machines. Even so, it should still bring me to the OpenFirmware screen if I am holding the ESC key correct?

Ummm, I also BELIEVE a lot of other things...  I was wrong and now that both machines are unlocked (I still think I did this ages ago...) I go right to the OK prompt.  It appears my images are corrupt on my USB drive.  But I am DEFINATELY moving ahead and expect to be through the corrupt file issue.  I can't find my other high capacity USB drive (if I get consistent failures after downloading the file again while trying to install I will blame the stick), so I may go buy a new one tommorrow.

Thanks!

So now that I have a corrupted build on the machines, what do I do?  I get a boot failed, powering off in 30 seconds with a sad face.
I have downloaded the images again onto USB, but now I get the power down warning.
Thanks

If the images are corrupt you can only redownload the img and the matching crc files. I find most reliable to use wget
Another trick you can do to make sure that the files are ok is do download with wget to your hard drive. Check their md5sum transfer them to the usb stick, sync, and check md5sum of those. Should be identical.
Of course a good usb stick helps Cheesy

Both OLPCs boot from the sticks and erasing / writing then one has 1209 Cleanmarkers and the other is 1153 Cleanmarkers.  It stops at the OK prompt.  I have a page of green and blue squares.  If I reboot the system fails because no OS.  I can go back and install Sugar with no problem and it goes to reboot fromt the block page without a problem.  This happens with both OS16.img and OS100.img.

I am following the directions at the start of this thread as well as at:
http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Deployment_Team/Fedora_on_the_XO-1

I have not checked the CheckSum (it appears the above Fedora page does not have the Md5 file for the img files)

AFTERNOON UPDATE:
Same thing happens with a brandnew SanDisk 8GB.  Gets to the split color screen and an OK prompt.  Type reboot and then it comes up with the no OS error and shuts down.

Are you leaving-in the stick when it reboots? it needs to go through the updating of your firmware process... also make sure your XO is plugged-in when you reboot. Allow some time for it to check your firmware and update if possible.

Keith,
sorry if you already answer some of these but let me repeat the most likely issues in probability order.

1) Having and installing a developers key is not sufficient. You must permanently disable security from a running os (the sugar os802 I guess that runs ok in your machines) before you install any unsigned build or a build signed with a different key, like the os###py builds.

2) As goney3 points out these builds most likely will update the firmware first. You do not need to have the stick plugged when you reboot but you do need to have the power adapter plugged in. Other wise the firmware will not update and the builds will not run.

3) Having "green and blue squares" after the installation and an ok prompt is not enough. Make sure tat there is not even one grey block in between green and blue and that before the ok prompt there is not any message about a "mismatch in block XYZ"

If non of these works just try to install os850
This is the first "officially signed" "release candidate" for "best image ever" F11-XO and will run on any machine independent of their security status!
Give it a spin.

Is anyone out there doing e-mail with the fc11-Gnome OS?  I have installed Midori (first time I have used it), and it doesn't seem to have e-mail built in.  Is there a relatively lightweight e-mail client available in the fc11 repositories that would be a good companion to Midori?

I have tried using Yumex to get a listing of available e-mail clients, but it doesn't seem to me to be as user-friendly as Synaptic Package Manager.  And about 431 of the XO's 433 MHz seem to choke using Yumex, in spite of a swap space > 2X Ram size.

Any suggestions?
