Have been trying all day to set up the XP Pro Remote Desktop with my XO...followed the official Microsoft instructions and configured my Netgear router but to no avail...just can't get rdesktop on the XO to connect. Would really appreciate if someone could detail the necessary steps before I lose whatever is left of my sanity!

Misha, I'mgonna give you one advice begin by succeeding to do a remote desktop from a windows machine to another windows machine. When this succeed, you start again with the OLPC instead...

Second idea, start by doing a DMZ setting on you router so you sure everything will go by. By the way if you are on a home network for bothmachine no setting on the router will be required.

Good luck

I know this is a silly question, but as I was able to connect via rdesktop to a server at work that's set up for this, is the windows box you are trying to connect to running a firewall? And if so is it blocking the rdesktop ports?

SIlly/basic I know, but I've fallen for this sort of trap myself.

I'm using the ZoneAlarm firewall but configured it per the instructions on another posting, so it should be ok. I'm truly stumped but will keep on trying till I get it all working! I've sucessfully installed Firefox, mplayer, Xfce (still need to configure things), etc...so am quickly getting my XO up to snuff, as far as my own needs go. So far, I am truly impressed by the hardware design and its capabilities, present and future. It's definitely a challenge learning the basics of Linux but not daunting in the least...and I'm having fun!!!

I took baloo22's advice to heart and established a connection from one of our other laptops to our home server...it worked beautifully! Actually a beneficial process since it clarified all the necessary steps in my mind that will hopefully help with the XO. So far though, it's still a no-go...

I can establish a good connection with rdesktop to a remote Windows and Linux (Debian Lenny) sever from the xo-1 laptop without having to give root password on the xo. I can even copy files and folders with Filezilla as Ftp client or Winscp from Windows or Nautilus with ssh from Linux server. The trouble I have  is that although local logging to the Linux server (not Windows) shows all locale settings right (spanish), logging remote to the server with the same user shows all locale settings wrong (english). You may not note this issue because it appears in english but if your server is in spanish and your remote sessions appear in english (keyboard, programms, menu, the whole desktop) and you intend to have those (multiuser) sessions for spanish speaking children then you are in trouble. With vnc or xdmcp on the xo I don´t have such trouble
Has someone a solution?
