I went back to the bbc video link listed above and relized that I had been answering the prompt incorrectly about whether or not I wanted to stop the video player because it was running slowly. When I told to run anyways, I was able to use the player just fine. It actually worked pretty well, except the video. I mean that the audio was great and the player didn't seem to slow down the computer much, but the video was lagging terribly and probably skipping about 90% of the frames. Its useful for lectures and interviews but if you actually need to see what is going on then you can pretty much forget about it.

Thanks for the reply.

The bbc video played OK except that lips didn't sync with the audio.   My main problem is that the volume, even at its max, is not enough for my old ears (I don't need any hearing aid normally).  I am satisfied  with the picture (shot indoors).

As far as Youtube video goes, both the picture and sound are quite bad, the sound more so than the picture.  This is probably because it was shot outdoors.

Again,  my original reason for not being able to play was the commented out lines (# lines)  in the .css file.   I certainly didn't put the #s there.

Re downnload as MP4,  I don't see any link to do that in either the bbc or the youtube web pages.   Do I have to do something to see those links?

Thanks again

What version of Deborah are you running. only 0.4 and 0.5 will have the youtube scripts so that the video players on youtube.com are replaced with a simple "download as mp4" link which, when clicked will automatically play the video in mplayer. The link should really be very obvious, big text in the middle of a blank area where the player usually is. click the link and it should play very well with good video and good audio, occasionally skipping frames depending on what you have running. please note that this only works for viewing videos on youtube.com

also I do not know what you mean by the .css file. which file in particular are you talking about.

I should also warn folks that the ability to watch youtube videos in deborah in this fashion is subject to breaking with any change on youtube.com. It seems to work but tomorrow it could no longer work. you'll also need a pretty steady internet connection, flash player will simply pause the video and rebuffer but mplayer will not do that, at least not the way it is currently set up.

Re. the version of Deborah I am running,  the output of the command
uname -a in a terminal window is as follows.

Linux Deborah 2.6.31_xo1-20100107.1704.1.olpc.dcf1bc1 #1 PREEMPT
Thu Jan 7 17:07:57 EST 2010 i586 GNU/Linux

This doesn't say 0.4 or 0.5 but I downloaded (file name Deborah-0.5-20100224.tgz
) and installed only 3-4 days
assuming it is the latest version.  After installing I ran the suggested "sudo
update/apt-get install" commands.

Re. the .css file I mentioned, the path of the file is as follows,
~/.opera/styles/user/noyoutubeplayer.css

The contents of the file are as follows,

movie_player { display:none }
player-toggle-switch { display:none }
player-open-popup { display:none }

This is after I deleted the leading # char in each line.

I came to know about this file when I righ-clicked  in Youtube page and next
left-clicked on "Edit site preferences" and next on "Display" tab.
Actually, when I go to Youtube page, initially the black screen appears
(with nothing inside) but very soon the black screen disappears leaving white
space.   This doesn't happen with the BBC page (which plays the video).
I checked this by commenting out the lines in the above css file.
Now the lines in  the file are uncommented out to allow me to watch the videos$

The only  thing different I did from  your instructions is that I unbundled
the tar bundle on my Ubuntu desktop and dd'ed  the image to XO-1 after
 formatting the Sandisk flash.

When I righ-click in the BBC page, the popup window displays
 the following,

BBC Media Player v.2.18.13034.14207
Settings
About Adobe Flash Player 10

Anyway,
I have the following OLPC software Rev/Ver,
Build: 767
FW: Q2E41

which I believe are the latest official Olpc XO-1 releases.

Where are the youtube scripts you mentioned?  I would like to check them to  find out  why I don't  have the 'Download as MP4 file' link.

Thanks.

a few things:

css files aren't like bash scripts or other scripts. the # sign does not comment out a line but is part of the syntax, indicated that the parameters given should apply to the element with the name following the pound sign. That css file you are talking about is intended to do exactly the thing that you seem to be trying to avoid. In other words I wrote that stylesheet so that it would hide the player. If you can't watch videos in the flash player and you have a simple one click option to view the video in mplayer then it is better to not load the player at all. In fact it does start to load the player but only for the second or so before opera implements the stylesheet.

none of the customizations present in Deborah concerning youtube and/or flash player apply anywhere but youtube.com. This playing videos in mplayer business is for when you want to play a video on youtube.com. Put those # marks back in noyoutubeplayer.css and follow the link that you gave for Battle at Kruger:

Code:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LU8DDYz68kM

you will probably see a message about flash and javascript for a second while the page loads, then you may see the player appear for a second or maybe just a black box, but once the page loads it should just be a big "Download as mp4" link where all that once was. What happens after that depends on whether or not the script still jives with the way that youtube names and stores its videos. Currently when I click Download as MP4 nothing happens, if I copy the link address I can (from the terminal) tell mplayer to play it and it works fine. I think opera is just having difficulty following the link to the actual location of the file and gives up after a couple of redirects. Don't be too dissapointed though. Youtube is design to deliver videos only through its horribly inefficient flash player and since a very short time, a built-in player based on html5. which you can use only with google chrome ( on linux ). I had trouble using chromes html player on youtube. I recommend just telling opera to download the file. It will do that just fine and then you can simpy double click on it in the file manager (PCmanFM ) to start it playing in mplayer. It will play better too and you can seek and pause it and everything without problems. Its just less convenient becuase you'll have to wait 10 minutes while the video downloads.

If the rest of you could confirm whether or not you can watch youtube videos in mplayer the way it is supposed to work, that would be very useful. My problem may just be my extremely slow and unreliable internet connection at present.

I  put the #s back in the css file.  Now Youtube doesn't play the video but also no
"Download as MP4 link"  appears.   I never saw the  link anyway.

that is very surprising. check that ~/.opera/userscripts/KISSyoutubedl.user.js exists. I have no idea why it wouldn't , it came with Deborah 0.4 and 0.5 but I can't think of any other explanation.

It got weirder!

That was  last night. This morning it is a different story!   The black screen/window appears and disappears, the video doesn't play and the "Download as MP4 link" is still not there.   The  difference between last night and this morning is,  before I shut down the XO last night, I installed Iceweasel and tried it out.  However, I tried the Youtube video this morning on Opera browser.

The .js file  is  there.

I feell guilty I am taking too much of your time, I apologize and am more  than willing to give it up.

Thanks.

In opera go to youtube..com and right-click some empty space in the window and select "edit site preferences" .  Go to the scripting tab and make sure /home/olpc/.opera/userscripts is set as user javascript folder. And make sure that "Enable Javascript" is checked. Beyond that have you changed your username?

I haven't   created/changed any A/C or username.   It is whatever Deborah came with.
The scripts path is what you want it to be  and scripts are enabled.
Should I reinstall?

Is anyone else experiencing this problem? I would not suggest reinstalling. I do not think it would be worth it as I do not think it is functioning as it was intended and as it did up until a few days ago. I would recommend simply trying another script. delete KISSyoutubedl.user.js and replace it with something like Free Youtube! :

http://userscripts.org/scripts/source/34765.user.js

just right click the link and save it as /home/olpc/.opera/userscripts/FreeYoutube.user.js and see if that one works. It should also give you a big download link. I haven't used that one much so I can't tell you if its better or worse or if it even really works right but give it a try. if you don't like it you can always just delete it.

Replaced, as you suggested.  But no change.  The black screen pops up and disappears.  No "Download  as MP4 file" link.

I couldn't get the original script to work, so I added the new one posted above and did not delete the old one.  I then had two possibilities to download a video offered in the space where one would normally see the video start playing, but neither one worked with a left-click still until I right-clicked on the Download link and aked it to Save to Dowcnload Folder.  Then suddenly I had a Downloads tab appear and three files were ready to download (from left-clicking, then right-clicking all the same file).  Then I could open the file from the file manager and play it with mplayer.

Earlier I tried copying the address of the file from the Download as mp4 link and using wget to retrieve it, but I had a 404 not found error.

James,

I apologize for all the trouble I caused to you.  In spite of your advice not to reinstall, I reinstalled.

I opened Opera and went to Youtube.com/Battle at Kruger.

Lo and behold right in the middle where the black screen used to be
now I see the link "Download as MP4!"  I was able to download.  But there was no indication that the download started or when it was completed.   I monitored the Downloads directory and when the file size was constant for a while I assumed that the download was completed.

So, my guess is that something went wrong during my first installation.

But this time after the installation,  the command,

sudo apt-get install flashplayer-nonfree

failed several times.   I hope this is something temporary.

I think you may want to  or already know the following.  During the installation, at some point there was a message (saying that the maintainer of some package has updated it)  asking me if I want the new package or keep the old package.    I opted to keep the old package (by entering N) but it seemed like it installed the new package anyway.   But I am not sure though.

Apologies and thanks again.
