All right guys,
Yesterday Google released the open source code for their new netbook oriented Chrome OS.

Someone already appears to have compiled it to run on the EeePC:

Which one of us will be the first to get it working on the XO?
I bet the XO's wireless interface will be be quite the challenge. But hopefully we can knock the current 802's long, 2 minute boot time, down to perhaps 10-30 seconds with Google's Chrome OS!

I'm interested in this as well... I'm pretty sure it can be done, and it might even be fairly easy for all we know.

Unfortunately I don't have the time to look into this right now and probably lack the skills as well, so I'm hoping someone else are trying to make it work.

Although it would be interesting and I'd probably check it out if someone did it. I'm just not jazzed enough about a crippled, browser only O/S to go throught the hoops of porting it. It wont give my XO any features it doesn't currently have. It'll remove a lot of features I need and use. And being from Google it probably phones home far more then I'd like.

For me Chromium OS is a big step back into the Server/ThinClient days. Not a place I'll be runninig to.

99% of what I do is online or simple text editing. So RAPIDLY booting to a web browser is really all that I need.

Many people have additional needs, so Sugar, full featured Ubuntu, etc. each can meet people's specific requirements.

For me, SPEED & usability is where it's at. Any OS on the XO that is fast cold-booting to a browser will make me happy. I'm about to give Teapot's Ubuntu another try, however I'd love to see someone get the Chrome OS (or anything FAST (Puppy Linux?)) working on the XO.

Actually, that sounds like a pretty good idea to me. I've spent a good amount of time using the XO-1 as a thin client (or more correctly a remote desktop client using RDP). In my experience the machine is more usable and much more responsive when used as an RDP client, compared to running teapot's Ubuntu or Sugar natively. I've used RDP for web surfing and normal desktop applications.

Of course your needs and preferences will vary - but personally, I'll be very happy if Chrome/Chromium OS can begin to approach the performance and responsiveness that I get with RDP.

The disadvantage with both Chrome OS and remote desktop is of course that a constant internet connection will be required. You'd probably want to have a second operating system for offline use.
