I received this great email from Diego, which reminds me of previous conspiracy theories about One Laptop Per Child, like Negroponte = CIA one:

To me from a mere technical point of view this whole OLPC project is just a large scale field test for MESH networking technology anyway. Besides obvious (family) links between the chairman of this project and a certain high ranking government official, the real question here is why isn't there one laptop per child in the U.S.?

Probably because in your country this would spawn a big debate about whether there is enough evidence that the exposure to radiation coming from these devices can produce cancer or not (the same story as with cellphones). So what better idea than to try this out on children in development countries, whose parents probably will be just thankful for the aid given to their children, unlike those ungrateful U.S. parents that will just be bitching about such trivial issues.

Funny enough up until today there is no real evidence of the consequences of long term exposure to radiation from either cellphones or any other kind of wireless devices. The lack of evidence not necessarily meaning that it is safe.

Right....
So in one school you give XOs to every kid and wireless for home.
In another school with the same socioeconomic background you give  to every student one Pentium II (with flat screen of course) with Sugar for the school and a second one for home.  You also provide wired connection for this school and the homes of the students.
Then you have a 10 year monitoring of the health of the kids in both schools with annual blood tests, X-Rays, electocadiogram and head MRI, while you carefully monitor aptitude, IQ and behavior.
Repeat in 35 different settings.
Get and analyze your data.
Subtract the effects of background radiation from other sources (your other big secret project)
Then you can go "see I told you!", if the results fir or bury it if they do not fit your goals.
This MIT kids are geniuses
I wish they could have a similar planing for XO/Sugar development and deployment at OLPC

XO-1: Is never going to run Flash, but is certainly flashy!
(If you want Flash, get an XO-1.5 running OLPC 11.2.0 or XOpup Grin )
