my XO icon looks like a TMNT

September 08, 2009, 10:59:04 PM

i entered a search into the search engine on this site and saw only a couple of results for U3 usb drives. I know that they are probably the LEAST prefered usb drives to use with XO-1 laptop, but it is also one of the most common and cheapest flash drives on the market. Because of that it seemed to me that there should be a forum specifically for the drive (and perhaps any general usb issues/tutorials as well).

to start things off, I am looking for very specific directions on how to access my U3 usb 1 gig drive and install the directive.sig file on my XO so that i can install the modified fedora 11 OS image on my xo. if anyone could set me down the right path it would be appreciated.

oh, and I already know of http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Activation_and_Developer_Keys#If_you_wipe_out_your_developer_key

so i have some sense of what needs to be entered.

ps: didn't know whether to put this  in hardware/software problems or XO accessories...sorry if this creates confusion! And if it turns out that i had missed it (very possible) could someone point me in the right direction?

U3-sticks is a problem for the XO. Just use a simple USB stick.

However you can "unlock" your XO and install anything you want after that without a developer's key. While your XO has a developer's key installed, simple disable security at the open firmware prompt. After that you do not need the key. You can re-enable security as described in the same page and you can reinstall/reacquire your key instantly (after the first time) as long as you have an internet connection on a working XO (no matter what OS you are running) since the key is associated with the serial number of the machine.

On a side note if you want to run F11-based builds make sure you  install the latest firmware q2e41.

Greetings XO friends,
Please, could you post what is the latest stable firmware for a
non-Developer xo?
My non-Developer xo currently has q2e18 with Build 767.
Many thanks for all your valuable postings here and on Twitter.

thank you very much mav for your help. between that link to the disabling security, and my dumb luck, i do believe i've managed to do it.

also, thank you for those video games (marathon right? those precursors to halo) . i've had some fun with them.

back on topic:

i'm not sure if its known, but to anyone who has previously successfully installed their activation key, and have done numerous (or i guess at least one) reflashing of their XO since then...holding the "o" game button (and not the "o" on the keyboard") got me to the ok prompt. have no idea why (i thought that it would take me to an earlier version) but there you have it. another shining example of why its better to be lucky than smart.
