I can't connect to Internet!

I've had an XO for over six months- recieved a G1G1 in January- and everything has functioned fine, I've had a lot of fun with it

but recently (last week, maybe as long as ten days ago), I can't connect to any WiFi network

Methods I have tried (and failed):

Disable Network History
Turn off wireless radio, then back on
Different WiFi networks- home, at local university, public library, friends'...
Clean-Install of builds 802 and 767

I'm not competent enough to start checking things out in terminal or midnight commander, or playing with settings or channels
Also: after I've attempted the clean installs, without the ability connect I can't perform a software update, so now don't have terminal or midnight commander anymore (I know I could download them onto USB and install that way, but haven't yet bothered too)

Anybody willing to offer ideas or coach me back?
If there's information lacking just ask for it, any ideas or help is appreciated

Two questions:

When you say you cannot connect, does that mean you can see the icons for any networks ?

Have you tried to reset the radio by removing the battery for 30 seconds and replacing it (with power unplugged)?  Simply powering the XO off does not power off the radio (so it can remain a MESH relay).  This has been reported (anecdote) to correct a radio problem.

Also, was your clean install per http://wiki.laptop.org/go/No-fail_update ?  If so, the terminal activity should be present.  Huh

For clarification

The primary problem:
There are icons for all the networks and when I click to connect, the chosen icon flashes as if it will connect, but doesn't (the brackets don't appear, and internet is inoperable)

After your advice:
I tried removing the battery and replacing it- no luck (previously I simply switched to 'extreme power saving' mode to turn off the radio)

...and I've just done the 'no-fail' update the problem persists- I am currently repetitively clicking 'connect' on a network that has never failed me until recently
(procedure: i click connect and i patiently hold my breath as the bubble flashes- when it stops flashing without parenthesis, there is the option to connect again- then i try again)

Also: I've followed methods of the clean install process precisely...

Have no more specific suggestions.

Some users have reported that they must wait until the search for the MESH channel completes /stops (about two minutes) before trying to connect  -  not a problem with my old Linksys WAP11(b).

Clearly, your radio receiver is working since you see icons.  I even think (vaguely) that this means the transmitter is also working.

Have you previously only used your home network ?  Could something have changed there.  You must use channel 1, 6 or 11 and open sysem (exceptions exist).  The presence of some brand / models of access points in your area may interfer with the XO.

Since you did not mention the encryption keys, I assume your home access point (wireless router) has encryption disabled.  For WEP encryption, you will typically need to set the XO connect Key Type to Hex (40 / 128-bit) and Authentication Type to open system.  WPA encryption connection may not be 100 % reliable (per wiki release notes).

In summary, I can not match your symptoms to any of my experience.  Hope you get a reply from someone with knowledge about the XO transmitter and wireless handshaking. Are you near any local XO user group?

PS:  try the iw***** commands in directory   /sbin   .  Run the commands without parameters, and acceptable parameters will be listed.  There does not appear to be any tests there for specifically testing the transmitter though.

Hi Marcie2,

I was having issues connecting to the Internet as well, and I had not updated to a recent version, so this is what I did with my XO-1 and it's all working now:

1. Do a clean install from a USB stick.
I simply followed the instructions here from my Windows computer:  http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Release_notes/10.1.3#XO-1

2. Switch to Gnome, by hovering the mouse over the XO logo and waiting 3 seconds, (or right click on it), select My Settings, and click on Switch desktop, Switch to Gnome, Restart now.

3. Right click (O) the top right Connections icon that has 2 computers, it's to the right of the battery icon (that looks to me like a trash can), and ensure the Enable Wireless is selected.

4. Now click (X) the Connections icon, and the list of available networks nearby should show up.  (It still amazes me how many more WiFi networks are detected by the XO than any of my Windows machines).

5. Select your WiFi network, enter the password, and click Connect.

And that's what did it for me.  You can now switch back to Sugar and your network should be found and connected automatically.

Hope it helps.
