I saw the Classmate in Cali, Colombia a while ago!

You have a few things to consider, availability, price, operating speed, energy usage, and operating system.

You might be able to buy a classmate locally and not an XO to test out! THUS, Classmate wins!

Classmate comes with XP on some machines, and the SUGAR sottware now can be used on it.

Classmate has more SPEED and MEMORY.

The XO uses less energy, but who cares about it, if you can not look at YouTube videos other show you! CLASSMATE WINS!

Linux has much less viruses, but the file management system with the XO is challenging. You run out of memory with the XO and then have to restart the machine like it was the 1st day you got it. You loss your data on the machine! Classmate wins again, since it has more memory!

The XO does not get broken by children so often when compared to the Classmate. XO wins the kid test!

well, most of the problems will be helped with.

The issues with running out of ROM when downloading and decompressing and installing  big files ( media...) or programms not previously installed on root are issues that the local deployment teams should help to prevent in form of educating the local teachers and avisors on the 101 of the operating system.

Since itīs runing on open firmware you canīt go out and install a OS as usual as the EFI is rudimental and customized.

As for "anything else" hardware-related, the new hardware Gen1.5 will have the Via 1Ghz CPU (with "speedstep" form 400 to 1000 Mhz), the via 855 graphics ( can play hdtv and blueray), 1 gig of onboard ram ( classmate PC: 512 mb) and 4 Gb ( optional 8 Gb) of SSD/ flash ROM ( classmate PC: 2 Gb ROM).

All this goodness is still passively cooled and in the same chassis Smiley

The original poster did not ask for a comparison of future versions of the Intel Classmate or XO!

My XO laptop CURRENTLY has problems that requires a new version to be built!

The XO has 433 MHz AMD Geode CPU,  256 MB of onboard ram, and 1GB of SSD/ flash ROM
The Colombian Intel Classmate has 1.6 Ghz CPU,  512 MB Ram,  30 GB Hard Drive.

Look at this video. It is in Spanish, but even English readers can understand the information!
" <a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/oTd3Ge0dV1o" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/oTd3Ge0dV1o</a>"

Based on current models, stick with the Intel Classmate and use SUGAR on a stick!

said gen1.2 is what is sitting on my desk, i am aware of that. still, orders placed within the next week and processed mid7 end of juli or early august will allready have the gen 1.5 "interior" so they will beat the classmate also in meanings of hardware capabilities and storage ( permanent and temporary / ram and rom).

The keyboard may be small but itīs spillproof, and i can clean up spilled coffee by putting the XO under the hose of running water - easy as that.
a toughbook ( panasonic, 300 dollrs and up) fails if i use it under the shower, thje olpc doesnīt. a toughbook claims to be safe to falls from desks up to 90 cm of height but fails if i throw it in the trunk the keyboard will split - not on the XO.

The XO is readable in bright sunlight thanks it great display, the classmate setups donīt even have non-glre displays most of the time and donīt even try to compete in sturdity with the XO- a spilled glass of water or a too frim press on the keyboard can easily wreck it, not even needy to drop the clammate pc phyisically or leave it out in the rain - it will fail in childrens hands by soon, other than the XO.

You really think someone today asking about the XO will be getting the new improved model?  With all the Original XO's being given away to non profit agencies, it is doubtful the newer version will be in the hands of the original poster!

Do you know if the orginal XO owners will be able to swap in a new motherboard into our XO?
