Hello,

I hope someone can help me with my XO. Suddenly it stopped booting showing a message saying something like: couldn't activate this XO. I 've tried since then to update the firmware and the nand image but no success.

Right now, when I turn on the XO it takes like 10 seconds and then it displays "Type 'help' for more information"

When I turn it on with the game keys pressed the following is displayed:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Release the game keys to continue
OLPC B4, 256 MiB memory installed, S/N SHF#########C
OpenFirmware    CL1     Q2C26    Q2C

USB2 devices:
/pci/usb@f,5/wlan@0,0
USB1 devices:
Type the Esc key to interrupt automatic startup
Boot device: /nandflash:\boot\olpc.fth Arguments:
<buffer@800000>:11: visible  ?
<buffer@800000>:16: visible  ?
<buffer@800000>:26: wait-until  ?
<buffer@800000>:28: ?enough-power  ?
Type 'help' for more information.

ok
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

What can I do? Please advice.

Have you looked at this?  :
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/XO_B4
Your machine was a limited production (less than 2000)

If you try to upgrade a deactivated machine, it will stop after the upgrade.
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/De-Activated_Upgrade

It sounds like your activation lease has expired (not a G1G1 machine).   You will need a USB drive with activation code for your serial number or be within wireless range of a school server that has the activation codes to renew your lease (security feature).

Where did this XO come from --- a school ?

It is a special sample for testing. I work in the government and we are exploring a project with the OLPCs.

I'm not a developer, what can I do?

Thanks

This is not a developer issue -- is  a theft prevention issue.

You may want to start with [email protected]  .

These wiki articles explain the process of getting an activation key.  See this article for creating a collection key (to collect XO serial number), which can be done on any  computer:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Activation_and_Developer_Keys#Getting_devkey_data_via_USB_stick
The discussions about the file "lease.sig" apply to your situation.

If you can establish an account with OLPC, then (requires password):

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Lease_management

Here is an example of implementing a project:

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Tests/Start_up_and_Activation

I am not part of OLPC, and these are informational only.  Your definitive source is [email protected]  .
