How to get Jabber client to work with chat?

We were original G1G1 responders.

My daughter would like someone to chat with. In vain we've waited a year, in all different circumstances, but no little men appear in the network neighborhood.

So today we try the jabber server thing.

But these servers are not very well populated, and seem to be occupied by developers or older children. Seem to be people also that may just leave their machines running.

So next, I'm wondering if at least maybe I, and later her mother, could chat using existing software.

According to some docs, we should be able to use jabber. So far I've tried Psi and Pidgin. With both of these I can see my daughter's account, using xo1share.org or another server as the intermediary server. With Psi I can even post an IQ snippet that makes my icon appear in the neighborhood. But no matter what we try, we can't initiate a conversation. She can't initiate an invitation to me if she can't see my icon (Pidgin), and even with my icon (Psi) the invitation never gets received. Likewise, any attempts to chat with her from Psi or Pidgin are not detected.

So, has anyone actually been able to use a Jabber client to communicate with the OLPC?

Thanks,
Mark

For general IM chating, you may want to use another public jabber such as:

http://www.jabber.anywise.com

XO  jabber sites use a cutomized ejabberd.

An XO contacts the server with:  server/telepathy.
Server logs show a user (probably you) logging on  server with server/hermione2008.

Anyone know what hermione2008 is ??

An XO jabber has only one common "conference" group.  OLPC is working on school server (which includes jabber) with several groups (classes).

You may want to include some group identifer in your XO nickname and add users with the identifier to your "friends" view.  Example might be Jane_child.   This does have its own problem of course.

Yes, a lot of XO users on a Jabber site just have their XO on and so there they appear on the Jabber.  I encourage users to set their "mesh server" to a nonexisting site (such as xyz.org)  unless they intend to use the Jabber.

Thanks for your reply!

Is any of this documented? I've spent HOURS trying to put together bits and pieces of information. Nothing mentioned the "telepathy" thing. I'm sure I'm not the only parent that would like to chat with their child.

How do I change server/telepathy to something else in the XO (which is probably what a public jabber server will want) or what does server/telepathy correspond to in a typical jabber client (so I know how to change it to talk to an XO site?).

Thanks,
Mark

Maybe we can get Anna or Mike Lee's input here:

http://www.olpcnews.com/forum/index.php?topic=3891.msg26663#msg26663

The server at xo1share.org is currently limited to port 5223, which is a legacy port used by XO's.   This is not typical.  The port  5222 is typically port used as the first choice by  IM's
This was done as a security measure:  open only the ports needed.
Maybe this needs to be reconsidered.

PS:   If you have not upgraded to latest software (8.2.0   aka 767), would recommend it:

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/No-Fail_Upgrade     or
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Release_notes/8.2.0   section about XO not connected to internet.

Very easy if you have a PC or Mac on internet with USB flash (thumb)drive.  Two clicks (1/2 hour). Put USB drive in XO and boot while holding down all four game keys (under right speaker).

MarkS,
If you are online and set your network to xo1share.org, you will find other xo's connected to that jabber server (in Michigan). During west coast school hours you'll usually see several xo's with a name ending "@roomtwelve.com" - they are xo's in my third grade classroom in Seattle. We'd love to chat/share with others (whom we know). Send me an email and let me know your xo's name, and we'll look for you in the "hood" - Mark

Thank you for your kind offer. The problem, of course, is that we're also on the West Coast so my daughter may be at school (no OLPC) when you're kids are at school. Fortunately she gets sick a lot (just kidding). I'll write you and see if there's any hours that don't overlap.

You know, I think we saw some roomtwelve activity on Monday. Is that possible?

Thanks,
Mark
