Seems OLPC France is hacking away at Open Office.  They now have it running on an XO through Sugar: OOo4Kids (OpenOffice for Kids) on the XO

One small drawback - launch takes 40 seconds

Hola!

I think there should be a message that shows up that explain OO's limitations for the user. It could be turned off, but it could explain how OO should be running or how the OO applications are limited. I can not forsee why a child needs 65000 rows in a spreadsheet. Dropping its default setting to 1000 rows and giving 1 tab by default would save file and memory requirments. The msgbox could alert the user of its limitations.

Reduce the number of rows/columns is a real great idea.

FYI, there is a wiki where you can contribute, and propose features. As the only dev working on that for now, I cannot promise the feature will be added soon, but have a clear Roadmap is always excellent.

The wiki I'm referring is : http://eric.bachard.free.fr/wikibe/index.php?title=OOo4Kids

Thanks Smiley

@GregYohn

Done : after I discussed with Eike Rathke (the main Calc dev) I have limited the Calc sheet to :

256 columns
1024 rows max
only one tab per sheet by default

... and that's ok (just tested one minute) :-)

To come:  display only some functions, depending on the level of the user (between beginner/middle/expert). Default value will be beginner.

I'll update the wiki accordingly, and thanks again to Eike Rathke Smiley

To be continued ...
