Share Memorize Activity Custom Flashcards?

Do you have any custom Memorize Activity “games” used as flashcards that you would like to share with the XO community?   Multiply your accomplishment.

If you have anything that you would like to share, then upload them to the “XO FLASHCARD EXCHANGE”.  Upload them using the Browse Activity and add additional descriptions. (Note:  permissions are set to not allow user deletion after uploading.)

Anyone can then download the flashcard using the Browse Activity.

The files will download with long names but the names can easily be shortened.  Start the Memorize Activity and use the Create tab and load the file into Memorize.  Using a small trick will allow you to save it as the name in the “game name”.  Simply make any small change such as clicking on “Equal Pairs” at the top of the page and then click it off again.  This will enable the Save icon and click on it to save.  The Journal entry with the long name can then be erased.

If you prefer, you can email the files (copy from Journal to a USB drive and email from PC or Mac) and the flashcards will be loaded for you.

See http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Community_Jabber_Servers  and site information for xo1share.org,  which has the link and email address (under Contacts).

The “XO FLASHCARD EXCHANGE” for upload / download is:  http://xoshare.org/card

This is just starting.  Any feedback  appreciated.

Great idea Dinky!
I tried the example with the 2 images but do not appear to be willing to load in the game if you just select image and click on the downloaded file. Should they be unzipped first to become individual images to be recognized?

The file downloaded is zipped and would open in etoys if  the Journal entry is clicked directly.

If you start Memory Activity and load the downloaded file via the Create option and save it, then the Journal entry becomes normal.  If you click on the new entry it will open with Memorize Activitity.

You must make some small change to the file while it is in Memorize, such as clicking on the "Equal Pairs" and then clicking back off.  This enables the Save icon and the file will be save as the name in the "Game Name" and will be a normal Memorize file thereafter.

There is also a trick that must be used with emailed files.  My email client adds the extension ".xml" when it is detached.  The extension must be removed.  Memorize/Create/Load can then read the file from the USB drive.

Unless you have ViewSlides Activity that will open the images be default in Sugar instead of etoys, but without saving the unzipped files. If you do unzip in the terminal (downloading be firefox for example) will not be visible by the journal and Memorise activity.

The downloaded file does not open/load with memorize activity in its compressed format

I missed that. So you say download on another computer (remove .xml if necessary) unzip and transfer to the XO via USB?

Not familiar with firefox.  Browse downloaded Journal entry will load into Memorize if you start Memorize / Create tab (pane) and then use Load.  The Create / Save saves the game out to a different file, which can then be loaded and played (in Play pane) in the normal way -- discard the Journal entry for the downloaded version.  I have tested this on several XO's (8.2.0 aka 767).

The file on the USB drive works similarly (if any "xml" extension added by the email client is stripped).   In Memorize/Create/Load, the load finds all potential files on the XO and the USB drive (the icon will be grey shaded rather than colored).  Select the emailed file and complete its load into Create.

Make some small change (toggle "Equal Pairs" ON then OFF or change the Game Name) which enables the Save icon and save.  The file will be saved in Journal and the Journal entry will function in the normal way.  This is for an email exchange -- not  the download (have not tried that on USB drive yet).  I have tested this by copying a Journal entry onto a USB drive, email attachment  (Windows 2000), email detachment, stripped off "xml" extension (ignored warning), copied to USB drive, and loaded into Memorize/Create/Load. No manual zip / unzip involved.

Edit:   The download to USB drive works the same.  File has the extension of ".zip", but keep the extension. End

In general, the email detachment file looks like a simple xml file, but Memorize only recognizes a simple file name  (no extension) with the correct parameters.

OK it worked!
For the record here is what I did.

1) Download the file with Browse activity. Will be in the journal. Do not open it.
2) Open Memorise.
3) Select the Create tab
4) Click new game icon (1st top left)
5) Click load game icon (2nd top left)
6) In the window that opens, select the downloaded file. (you'll see the new cards on the right side panel)
7) Make a small reversible change (like checking and unchecking the "equal pair box")
8 ) Click the save game icon (3rd top left)
Done!
Go back to the journal and erase the downloaded files.

Thanks!
