Has anyone gotten the backspace key working with GNU screen?

I saw the discussion here:

I can learn to use ctrl-h, but it annoys me. . .

**EDIT** I mean the ERASE key of course!

As pgf mentioned in the other thread, I tried running "stty erase ^h" before running screen, as well as few variations on that, but so far nothing fixes the erase key. I'll keep trying stuff, though.

I just spent an hour trying all the fixes and workarounds I could find. None of them worked. I note that a Defect has been opened against this issue:

Ticket #5731 Erase stops working when using screen in Terminal

Thanks for the replies.  I killed a good couple of hours googling and trying things in screenrc, etc.  I'll keep my eye on that ticket.

I had this screen/backspace issue with Teapot's Ubuntu 8.10 XO install. The problem is with xfterm4, the default XFCE terminal.  To fix this, right-click on the terminal and select Preferences, then click the Advanced tab.  For the "Backspace key generates" field, select Control-H instead of Auto-detect.
