Ok, well, I give up on ever getting FBReader to work. I got the XO to boot again after removing the spurious link I had created.

So, how does one operate READ when the XO is flipped and only the game controls are usable?

Here's what mine does, and apologies to Malachi Constant:

First, the handle is on the left, the game pad is on top, and the game buttons are on the bottom.
The screen shows a left and a right triangle (Back and Forward), and then an oval with a page number in it, of "/77" pages. Below that is Activity  Edit  Read  and View. Read is dark or highlighted.

The Game Button at 12 makes the visible page larger. The one at 6 makes it smaller, and could get small enough to see two pages. The ones at 3 and 9 do nothing.

The Game Pad is divided into 4 equal sections, and possibly can be pressed directly in the middle also.
When I'm in the current page oval, pressing left and right simply move the vertical line from the left of '1' to the right of '1'. That's all those do. Sometimes you can get the page '1' to be fully highlighted.
Still in the current page oval, pressing 'up'  moves me to the Forward triangle, and I would love to say that then pressing anything gets me to page 2, but nothing does. Pressing 'down' gets me back to the current page oval.

For the record, the arrow from the now inaccessible touchpad is hovering over the Backward triangle. And, combining the game pad and game buttons changes nothing. I unflipped the unit and moved the touchpad arrow to the Forward triangle, flipped it,  and nothing worked differently. Leaving it as a notebook makes everything work as expected.

Is there any way to get to page 2?

In read? The gamepad works to flip pages. At least it does for me. Try reinstalling read.

I noticed that when you are in read before  you rotate the screen (physically and by turning the XO) you might have to mouse the mouse and click on the page.  Read seems to start off with the toolbar selected and by pressing the game pad buttons you move between the menu options.  If you click on the page first and then rotate the screen you can use the game pad keys / buttons to change pages.
