OK, I ordered my XO on the day G1G1 Europe went live. I was told it would be shipped between 19 and 22 Dec 2008.

Then if you look at the XO laptop on Amazons website it says that they won't be available till 3 Jan 2009.

I then got the following mail from Amazon over the weekend

Quote

Dear portseven

The following order, placed on 17-Nov-2008 with One Laptop per Child, will be canceled if the order is not ship-confirmed by 19/12/08. (Merchants on Amazon must ship products within 30 days from the date when the order was placed; otherwise, the order is automatically canceled.)

==================================================
ORDER DETAILS
==================================================
Order ID:      XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Merchant name: One Laptop per Child
Item(s) to ship:
     Name: OLPC XO Laptop
     Qty:  1      ASIN/ISBN: B001LDQWJI

Your credit card has not been charged for the order.

Anyone got a clue as to what is going on?

Sounds like there are inventory problems.  When it was announced that Amazon would be handling the G1G1 program this year, I pointed out that there are 2 ways that this could be handled... one was for Amazon to do the whole thing... (take the order, process the order, collect payment, actually warehouse the XO, and ship from their warehouses) which I thought was highly unlikely or Amazon could simply act as the "order/payment taker" requiring OLPC to actually have a warehouse of XOs and for them to actually ship them.

Based on that email it appears that Amazon (at least for the UK) is simply acting as the frontman for G1G1 and that OLPC is a marketplace vendor and responsible for the actual shipping of the XO.

Amazon.com (US) is the warehouse & shipper for the XO. But it may be that Amazon.co.uk (EU) is relying on the US warehouses for shipping. OLPC is not doing the actual shipping --- its all on Amazon's shoulders.

I'd suggest contacting Amazon to decipher the message.

That is NOT what that email states though.  It says that the Merchant is OLPC and that it is a Marketplace transaction.  Amazon does NOT ship items sold by marketplace merchants.

OLPC & Brightstar are doing the non-UK Shipping:

Quote

Gustavo Mariotti, working with Nicole Dallow and others from the Brightstar Miami office, repackaged laptops for the UK shipments. Kim and Gustavo have figured out how to work with Amazon UK to accept two types of orders - those fulfilled by Brightstar and those fulfilled by Amazon. Next week, we expect to prove that we actually can ship through this program. We should also have our WEEE Certification for UK (recycling electronic goods) by next week.
