Has anyone managed to perform a successful Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) install on the XO yet?
Or, should 8.10 still be the version to use?

As far as I know Teapot hasn't finished the Jaunty version yet (there would be a separate thread for it as was with Intrepid)

There don't seem to be any killer feature in Jaunty compared to Intrepid so I suppose it is just not so urgent.

Boot time is probably the biggest feature.  When asleep, my XO still burns ~2% battery per hour, so there's a big power/mobility advantage from a full shutdown.  So far, folks have raved about fast startup times in jaunty. Not sure how compelling of a feature that is...

If Jaunty boot time were something like 10-15 seconds on the XO, I might be considering it. However, I don't think it will be so fast.

I also suspend my XO but usually keep it plugged in.

On XO boot time mostly depends on amount of things that have to be read from boot media -- what for any desktop-oriented Linux configuration will be more than 10-15 seconds.

Take all the time you need, there's no rush; I've been using my XO with 8.10 as my travel laptop; connecting to work with it (rdesktop and vpnc) while in another country a few times, even. I could do the same with XFCE over fedora (I did before), but I found ubuntu to be much smoother to use.

Thank you again for all your efforts, it's made my little green machine not only more useful, but also more enjoyable to use.

?

security MUST be a directory -- if it isn't, you did something wrong, and have to restart everything from the very beginning.

I've been trying to get microphone input to work in the FlashPlayer 10 running inside Firefox 3.0.10 on Ubuntu for XO (8.10 xfce4).   The FlashPlayer settings dialog does not hear anything from either the XO's built-in microphone or from an external microphone plugged in.  I tried the same settings on a PC runing Ubuntu, and the FlashPlayer does hear the microphone there.

I was using the latest firmware q2e41.  I re-flashed back to firmware q2e33 as recommended here.  It did make sound output work now (that is, I can hear system sounds like the Ubuntu drum beats at boot-up), but still the microphone is not heard by FlashPlayer.   I also tried the gnome-sound-recorder 2.24.0.1 that comes with this Ubuntu distribution, but it does not hear anything from microphone, no matter which input I select (microphone, capture, etc.)  The level indicator in Sound Recorder shows a small level of random sound, but not related to what the microphone hears.   When I try to playback what was recorded, I get "Internal GStreamer error: state change failed. Please file a bug at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=GStreamer."   I didn't get that GStreamer error when I tried all of this with the latest firmware q2e41 before reverting back to q2e33.

Any suggestions to get microphone input working?

.... UPDATE:  I went back to the mixer panel on Sound Recorder and muted microphone but unmuted line-in and set it to half volume.   Lo! I got sound input from the microphone, both from the internal mic and when I plug in an external mic, from the external mic.   So,  on this Ubuntu setup, microphone is hooked to line-in on the driver, I guess.

I then went back to the FlashPlayer 10 settings panel and verified that microphone works as long as I keep the Ubuntu volume mixer set with line-in turned up and not muted.

I too am trying to get my Wacom Bamboo tablet to work with Ubuntu 8.10 for the XO.  I found this explanation of how to install the missing wacom kernel module for Ubuntu 8.10's standard release: Moosechips' instructions for wacom kernel module installation.  I downloaded and ran Moosechips' script "install_linuxwacom" but it stopped short with an error message generated by the apt-get command line when it tried to get the package linux-headers-2.6.25.1.olpc.f10b654367d7065.   That file does not exist in the standard apt repositories because it's specific to teapot's version of Ubuntu for XO.  Moreover, I'm not sure that the rest of the script would run because it checks for kernel version 2.6.26 or later, and teapot is running 2.6.25.   Help!  Where can I download the necessary header file?  Can the kernel be updated to more recent versions without losing the XO adaptations?

The Ubuntu distribution for the XO is otherwise running great for me.  I have even been able to get the FlashPlayer 10 to recognize the XO's video and microphone hardware by going back to firmware q2e33 and using line-in instead of mic volume control.   Now if I could get Wacom to work, I'll be able to use the web app www.vyew.com whiteboard with my tablet, 2-way video, and 2-way microphone for live educational conferencing over the web between XO's running Ubuntu.

It is conceivable that by now your installation and mine of Teapot's Ubuntu are quite different but for the record Firefox 3.0.10 Flash 10.0.22.87 and firmware q2e41 work just fine for camera and microphone with the original settings in Alsamixer.

Moreover, I'm not sure that the rest of the script would run because it checks for kernel version 2.6.26 or later, and teapot is running 2.6.25.   Help!  Where can I download the necessary header file?  Can the kernel be updated to more recent versions without losing the XO adaptations?

Also for there is a new kernel hacker at OLPC with some much newer kernel version (.30) look here http://dev.laptop.org/~dsd/20090604/ However, if these versions will be OK on the XO and more specifically Ubuntu, I do not know. Try them

I hope you are successful but I would doubt that XO-1 hardware can handle 2-way video let alone running other applications in the background while doing this

Actually, 2-way video and simultaneously 2-way audio is working fine at www.vyew.com between my Ubuntu-XO and a Windows computer communicating over the Internet through vyew's server.  There's a delay naturally due to the round trip over the Internet, but the video and audio are clear at both machines.   The XO is running FlashPlayer 10 in Firefox.

The problem with the Wacom Bamboo tablet is still unsolved.   When I plug the tablet into another laptop running Ubuntu 8.10 (not an XO but an old Pentium III HP notebook), the Wacom just works as a mouse.   When I do the same on the Ubuntu-XO, the blue LEDs on the tablet light up, but the stylus movement has no effect on the screen pointer.  An external mouse does work.  "modprobe -l wacom*" reports that "wacom.ko" is present in kernel input drivers on the generic Ubuntu 8.10, but nothing is reported on the Ubuntu-XO, confirming that I need to get the driver.   The generic machine is running Ubuntu kernel 2.6.24-24-generic.   The XO has 2.6.25-20080925-.... . Do you think I can just copy the wacom.ko file to the Ubuntu-XO and get it to run after a reboot?  Or might the .ko file be specific to the kernel revision number and need to be recompiled with the new header file when I can get it?

Every other application the uses 2-way video (Video chat, Skype) just crashes the XO almost immediately

Do you think I can just copy the wacom.ko file to the Ubuntu-XO and get it to run after a reboot?  Or might the .ko file be specific to the kernel revision number and need to be recompiled with the new header file when I can get it?

I'm sure that other people can address it much better than me, but I think that even with the same kernel version you have to recompile the kernel to add a new module. Try something like this
