Suspend functionality is implemented in three scripts: /usr/bin/xo-suspend , /usr/bin/xo-pm-input-monitor and /usr/bin/xo-pm-interrupts-monitor

xo-suspend is supposed to be called from xo-pm-input-monitor

xo-pm-input-monitor is called from /etc/gdm/Init/Default , /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default and /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default

xo-pm-interrupts-monitor is called from /etc/rc.local

i'd like to disable suspend/resume on lid (ive had problems with the machine resuming unintentionally in my backpack).  I looked at the files, and it wasn't immediately apparent what to comment out or change. any suggestions?  also, is a logout/login required after modification?

oops - new functionality.  does this also disable resume on lid open?
 
1. .xo-suspend/lid-disable file disables auto-suspend on closed lid. Screen is turned off, however laptop continues running in its normal mode. This is useful when laptop is used as a music player.

I awake this morning, go to load up Open Office, and the handy-dandy launcher for all of the applications has fled in the night! (On a serious note, I don't know what happened, but it has me feeling like my grandfather every time he calls me to tell me his task bar has disappeared.) I've done some searching, both through threads here and across the 'net, but to no avail. Help?

In menu>settings>settings manager>autostarted apps uncheck the Network manager box and reboot.
I'm not sure that this is a "tested and qualified" airplane mode but there is no network activity  after that in any of the network interfaces.
Check the box and reboot to go back to normal

To just get a panel (and then configure it as needed) right-click on an existing one, select "customize panel" to open the panel manager and then add (+ sign) a new panel. Or in terminal type "xfce4-panel -a".
To get the original teapot's panels you need to reinstall the /home/olpc/.config/xfce4/panels/ folder from the tarball or a backup (see howto here) but first check the /home/olpc/.config/xfce4/panels/panels.xml to see if may be a problem there

I guess my real problem is that while I can configure the panel, I'm just not sure what to be adding to configure it so that I have the application drop down.
I'm not going to do a reinstall of the original panels right now, I'm too frustrated to tinker, and to "solve" my problem (since I've been using the XO mainly as an ebook reader lately) I've dropped a shortcut to the applications folder on the desktop and I'll launch from there and build up the desire to do a fresh install of the next version of the os when it's time.

It is a sandisk 2GB card. It got unformatted at the beginning of the process. I have since formatted it again as vfat, but I can try the process from the beginning again, which will unformat it again.

Before I did any of this, the system recognized the card.  Now that I reformatted it, it does not seem to want to recognize it.  Perhaps that was just me... you get punchy after so much head banging.

Some of the people here (including myself) had trouble making it work with some Sandisk cards.

Which sandisk cards? I've had very good results with a 4gb extreme II - it faithfully gives 9mb/s write and 15mb/s read. It's popped out of the slot in my backpack once or twice, but no systems issues.

You might want to check that it's in the slot very firmly.

The OLPC troubles ive read about have mostly been with the Extreme III cards. Also, the total-failure rate of many cards seems to hover between 5-10% within the first few months. Waaaay too high for my taste! Check it in another machine to make sure it still works at all.

I spent some time with this today.  I can confirm that:
  * adding .xo-suspend/lid-disable takes effect immediately, no logout required.
  * it does not disable wakeup when the lid opens.

I tried futzing around in /usr/bin/xo-pm--interrupts-monitor, commenting out the /sys.../lid/wake line, and echoing "disabled" to /sys.../lid/wake, but it always woke back up on lid open, and /sys.../lid/wake always got reset to "enabled".  Are these the right files to look at, and is something else controlling this?

I've been running this installation of intrepid for a whle without problems. I'd like to learn more about linux and the xo and would like more lightweight system. starting up in the command line sounds like a great way to do this. My question is simple. How do I edit the startup scripts to startup in the command line? I don't want autologin or xfce or x window server to start on boot. I'm guessing I just have to comment out a few lines somewhere but I simply dont know enough about booting yet to undertand how it all works. pointing me to appropriate documentation with some hints at what I need to do would be helpful.

After reading the /etc/rc2.d/README , man init , man inittab , and Debian Policy Manual (sysvinit) I learned that I could turn on and off boot scripts with a simple program called sysv-rc-conf. I turned off gdm and xserver and voila, my XO boots into console.

I wanted to tether my Nokia 6680 (GSM) phone to my XO in order to connect to one of the Hungarian 3G networks with it.

NetworkManager normally displays a wizzard for selecting the GSM service provider when you push the Add button on the Mobile Broadband tab. On the XO, it doesn't happen, only a choice is given whether we want to create a GSM or CDMA connection.

Do I need to install some extra software for this?

Cool, glad that works.
What are you using to negotiate wireless in the console?  Does it work relatively well?  I tried using wpasupplicant at one time and never really got it working.
