lid-without-password, power plug on, close lid to suspend
Greetings,
Are these settings I can modify, and if so, where? More to the point, I would like to disable all behavior pertaining to the lid being closed. Presently when I close the lid, it makes a sound then goes into some mode with the screen off that it won't come out of unless I power it off and then power it back on, and I would like it to just stay on as if the lid was open, only with the lid being closed. Google turned up /etc/acpi stuffs, but according to this forum the XO lacks acpi, and the Gnome Power Management app, which doesn't have a lid setting.
Also, thanks for everyone's efforts into getting Ubuntu kicking so much butt on the OLPC.

took the bull by the horns and made two copies of intrepid; one on PNY 4GB optima, the other on 8GB san disk extreme, from scratch, AOK.
what is 'ext3 needs recovery"? it pops up after system freeze. also what is the "ext2/3 enabling patch" for Mac?
you are dealing with an earlier generation (ca bill joy) unix person.
thanks for infinite patience from patrones!

@whimzerchee
Check "additional suspend options" links here
http://www.olpcnews.com/forum/index.php?topic=4057.msg27470;topicseen#msg27470
@greenheron
"ext2/3 enbling patch" look here
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ext2fsx/
"ext3 needs recovery" means that file system errors are found usually because of improper shutdown. They are taken care of at start-up by fsck. If not you'll know...

Hello Everyone!
I'm a complete newbie, both to the XO and to Linux/Ubuntu - but I'm learning. So bear with me! I've searched the forums for quite a while, and while several people have mentioned having a similar problem, I haven't seen a real solution. If I've missed a post somewhere that takes care of this, please point me to it.
I got the XO this Christmas for my 4-year-old. It took me a while to get used to Sugar, so I could show her how to work it. The simplicity is nice, but she (and I) are used to a windows UI (she's been browsing and playing educational games on our XP computer for several months now). I found the posts here about Ubuntu and I've successfully installed it to a 2G SD card. THANK YOU to all of you who put so much work into this!
Now the problem: Everything on the screen is TINY - as in, too tiny for a 4-year-old with a mouse to effectively navigate. I figured out thru Settings Manager how to change the icon size and fonts on the desktop, and I switched to Gtk theme which has the largest titlebar buttons I've found... but they're still tiny, as is the lower panel and most of the system text.
Following threads here, I carefully modified the xorg.conf file to change the display size, but it really only changed the fonts.
So the question is - is there any way to generally magnify EVERYTHING on the screen (other than getting my daughter reading glasses)? I understand the XO screen has only one resolution, but is there any way to emulate a lower resolution, or to add a lower-resolution mode and just live with a little fuzziness?
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks for your patience!

xorg-video-geode-2.11.0 supports multiple resolutions on the XO (see DebXO). If anybody can make it work with Ubuntu will be great. Hopefully when it makes it into the Ubuntu Intrepid repositories will be functional for teapot's Ubuntu. Wait a bit and hope.

Still having Skype sound problems despite having used the previously prescribed settings. .. This problem however looks a bit different:
Starting Skype from the terminal this error shows-up:
"ALSA lib. pcm.c.2196:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown pcm cards.pcm.hdmi"
I have set the sound card within Skype audio settings to "CS5535" (and also have tried default) but it looks like another PCM is controlling the situation.
I have tried a Skype reinstall .. same problem.
Any ideas?

MrDuck85, about a month ago, you stated that you had substituted the GNOME UI for the XFCE UI in Teapot's adaptation of Ubuntu, and felt that in terms of speed, it stacked up pretty well against HP/Vista and HP/Ubuntu while running Open Office.
When asked how to install GNOME on your XO/Ubuntu, you said that you used Synaptic to remove all of the XFCE packages, and using Synaptic you then added the GNOME packages that "looked necessary or interesting" (
http://www.olpcnews.com/forum/index.php?topic=4053.msg28342#msg28342
).
This sounded like something fun to try (I am using a 16 GB card so the added bulk of files is not an issue), so I did a search today on Synaptic for files containing "gnome" in the name or description, and it seems there are 1394 such files!
Is there any way to narrow down a little more what is "necessary" and then work from there?
Thanks!

Hi Eddie,
I don't have a definitive list, as I tend to think of making notes after I finish the job <g>. However, here are the files I now have on my system: gcon2, gcon2-common, gdb, gdeb, gdebi, gdebi-core, gdm, gedit, gedit-common, gnome-about, gnome-accessibility, gnome-accessibility-themes, gnome-app-install, gnome-applets, gone-applets-data, gnome-apt, gnome-art, gnome-backgrounds, gnome-bin, gnome-btdownload, gnome-cards-data, gnome-color-chooser, gnome-control-center, gnome-core, , gnome-desktop-data, gnome-desktop-environment, gnome-doc-utils, gnome-extra-icons, gnome-games, gnome-games-data, gnome-genius, gnome-icon-theme, gnome-keyring, gnome-libs-data, gnome-mag, gnome-main-menu, gnome-mastermind, gnome-media, gnome-media-common, gnome-menus, gnome-mime-data, gnome-mount, gnome-mplayer, gnome-netstatus-applet, gnome-nettool, gnome-network-admin, gnome-orca, gnome-panel, gnome-panel-data, gnome-pilot, gnome-pilot-conduits, gnome-power-manager, gnome-screensaver, gnome-session, gnome-settings-daemon, gnome-splashscreen-manager, gnome-system-monitor, gnome-system-tools, gnome-terminal, gnome-terminal-data, gnome-themes, gnome-themes-extras, gnome-user-guide, gnome-utils, gnome-volume-manager, gok.
Obviously not all of those are "necessary", but I have a 8GB card, so I didn't worry about the required space. I suggest you select those files I've listed that aren't game-related (or maybe those too), then accept any dependencies that come up. That's what I did, so I know for sure that there are other files installed as part of this exercise that I haven't listed. BTW, with all the stuff I've installed, my 8GB card has 4.1 GB of used space. That includes lots of ebook files and the full OO 3 installation.
Have fun, and don't worry about breaking things... I didn't, and I really didn't know what I was doing when I attempted this transplant. But I did make a copy of the SD card once I had everything working.

I believe that installing "gnome-desktop-environment" with synaptic takes care of everything (700MB)

Do I have to add a "startgnome" to some file somewhere and edit out a "startxfce4"?
Any other pitfalls anywhere?
Thanks!

No, I didn't do any edits at all. After the Synaptic Package Manager finished all the updates, I rebooted, and it came up into Gnome. Automagically, you might say.

If it won't get there soon, I will make a package with it.

The automagical part is in gdm configuration -- it defaults to gnome if it's available (you still can choose another session before login).

Yep!
Gnome was automagically there.
This looks interesting.
Thanks everyone!

Good for you!
Could you describe exactly how you did it and how does it compares performance-wise to XFCE? (I just want to quote one solution post...:-)
