I did type a space...that's what I saw in the discussion message...perhaps when I get home...I will leave out the space and see what happens!
Thanks mavrothal,
Lyle
I do not know if miss-typing is inherited to Linux but is certainly mine....
Add to that the XO's keyboard and you are done...
I wonder when someone will come up with something like in google searches that says "do you mean...'that'...?"
or a generalized visudo-like editor!

I used a Sandisk 4GB SDHC Class 2 card, and ended up with the following messages at boot time:
--------------------
SDHCI: Card didn't power up after 1 second
<buffer@ffb68e30>:18:
Can't open boot device
Type 'help' for more information
ok
------------------
HOWEVER, I figured out a workaround -- which is just to type the command "boot" at the ok prompt. That gets the system to use the SD card to boot up into Intrepid!
So, now I'm curious whether the line in the "olpc.fth" file which points the system to the olpc.fth file can be eliminated, because when you type "boot" the system just displays a line regarding the "olpcrd.img" file?
Thanks,
*Bradley
Do not remove the line! Would be no way for your XO to know to boot to the SD.
Your problem is likely related to the specific card and by the time you press 'boot' the card has powered properly and boots. I had a similar one with Hardy and an 1GB SanDisk card that was gone when I moved to another card.

mavrothal,
I typed alsamixer -V all and guess what, it worked! At least the controls came up. I then followed the instructions ...several times to make sure I understood everything...but when I tested skype, there was no noticeable difference. The skype test call is choppy and my voice is barely recorded.
I know the hardware works...becasue in Sugar, the record activity works fine...any other ideas or do I need to download some other drivers?
Thanks

In the sound control panel or alsamixer check the "mic boost". In this case though the other party may have more feed-back of their own voice.
Overall the sound quality is not outstanding but you can certainly have a decent conversation (I do). A cheap standard PC headset can improve things specially in noisy environments.

I guess I just can't expect too much from the XO...anyway...gooing to bed for now...will play with some more tomorrow.
Thanks mavrothal

Hi, I'm a long time follower of the quest for Ubuntu, big thanks to everyone who takes the time to share what they are doing on this.
After installing Intrepid, clean install on top of a clean and new latest Sugar, I'm having a problem getting connected. Has anyone else seen/solved anything like this?
I'm trying to connect with 128 bit WEP to a Linksys WRT54G and it keeps asking me for the passkey - which it already has. A popup comes up saying that passwords or encryption keys are required for the network. It has the passkey populated correctly, because I saved it, but when I click Connect, it tries and does the same thing.
Make sure that when you enter the key, the type of key is set to "WEP 40/128-bit key" and not "WEP passphase".
(or configure your router to use WPA because WEP encryption is insecure).

Thanks Teapot. I'm pretty sure I have the correct settings, although I admit I was confused by that, having never seen the passphrase option before.
It looked to me like NetworkManager was able to access the keyring when editing the connection, but not while trying to connect. Is that even possible?
switching to WPA is totally on my to-do list...

How so?

No, however you can see repeated key prompts if Network Manager can't get the address from DHCP (it assumes that you are trying to connect with a wrong key).

XO performance is more than sufficient for handling sound. Speakers are too small to produce anything but high frequencies, however there is nothing unusually bad about its sound card.
Choppy sound on a locally running application happens when you have another process wasting CPU time. If it only happens when talking over the network, you have a network problem (extremely low bandwidth, saturation or packet loss).

I've downloaded and un-tarred the Citrix ICA client package,
en.linuxx86.tar.gz
, on my Desktop. When I run
sudo ./setupwfc
in terminal, i get the error message:
This package does not contain a Citrix Client for Unix for this workstation.
Now what? Thanks. JCR
Code:
mkdir citrix
cd citrix
tar xvzf ~/Desktop/en.linuxx86.tar.gz
cd ..
./citrix/linuxx86/linuxx86.cor/wfcmgr &
Extreme ugliness of the interface is entirely Citrix developers' responsibility -- by now even
Adobe
learned how to use GTK, and yet Citrix couldn't find anything better than ancient Motif toolkit.

There are some desktop behavior "idiosyncrasies" that I would like to modify if easily possible.
- Files dragged between Desktop and the File System window are copied instead of moved
- You can not select multiple items on the Desktop by clicking and dragging the mouse across them.
- Removable media are showing on the desktop but are not mounted unless you double-click or right-click->mount
- Deleting a file in (FAT formatted) removable media, first copies the file to the trash, which can take considerable time for large (eg movie) files or folders with thousand of items. This is not the case if the file is on the desktop or the SD card filesystem.
I do not know if these are limitations of the XFCE desktop or are removed because they impose a burden on the limited XO resources, but if not I would love to change them.

Thanks for the hard work on this release! After a few tries and re-reading all the instructions I've managed to make it work with a generic 4GB SDHC with swap enabled and there's still a fair amount of disk space left for other apps - it certainly makes a lot of difference to have the XO-1 run a full desktop environment when needed! I've been planning to do it a long time ago but I need it now since I'll be on a road trip during the holidays and have no plans to lug around my 17" laptop ;-) The XO-1 would do nicely!
Thanks again!

Teapot -- I've got the Citrix client loaded up now. My office IT folks say they will call WatchGuard to ask if the ICA client will work on the Firebox product we use. Who knows how long I will wait for an answer (not high priority for the IT group). I'm not sure on my own how to set the configuration without my IT folks' input. Of course, I can see the various server info in the configuration of the Citrix vpn client on my home PC, but you'd know better whether I can use that info to populate the ICA client on the XO. If you want to guide, I'll try it out.
Meanwhile, I'm going to try GoToMyPC, as the XO with Java on it now should meet the requirements to allow me to bounce through GTMPC to my home PC, and from there to my office using the Citrix vpn client on my home PC. Thanks. JCR

Also the mic light of the XO stays ON
Edit 3
Un-checking the "V_REFOUT enabled" box in the sound control panel turns-off the light
Hmm this doesn't work with my installation though.
