First of all, thanks teapot! The work is great.
I followed all the procedures and the system installed nicely. The big exception is my wireless network that isn't working. Is this an expected bug or is happening just with me?
Any thoughts will help.

No, why? What exactly does not work?

The first thing I noticed is that no Wireless network was showing up in the applet. I took a look and there isn't any network device configured, just lo. The kernel modules are loaded, so I'm not sure what is happening.
Network works fine if I install an USB->Eth adaptor.
Thanks

Looks like firmware problem, SD card corruption or (likely) a combination of two. Re-format the card (or use another one, or USB drive), reinstall OS and firmware, check if all hardware works in Sugar, then reinstall Ubuntu on SD card.
I reinstalled firmware and OS, with some difficulty because the keyboard problem prevented me from entering the commands necessary to flash the firmware, but I was eventually able to do so. However, the keyboard problem still exists in Sugar. On pressing ctrl-alt-F1 from Sugar I noted some error messages apparently referring to the keyboard which I've transcribed below.
So is this a hardware problem?
I realize this may have nothing to do with your excellent 8.10 except for the fact that it arose while I was using it. But if you can help, or can direct me where to look for help, I would appreciate it. I'm particularly disappointed because with 8.10 I felt I could really do some interesting things with the XO.
Thanks.

To me, this seems like the "sticky keys" syndrome. This is a hardware problem which happens to quite a fair share of the G1G12007 machines. There seems to be no permanent fix for it aside from ordering a new keyboard from ilovemyxo or xoexplosion. Mine was affected too, I replaced it 2 weeks ago (tried to solve it several times and finally gave it up). The new one seems to work in order, no stuck CTRL or ALT keys anymore.

Hi Teapot,
IŽd like several Intrepid XOs to communicate with each other as if they were on a WLAN, but without the WLAN router, using the mesh networking infrastructure. Does this sound feasible or would it be a big waste of time and effort?

Hi Teapot. Returning to the Citrix world:
I am trying to install the Citrix ICA client. I've succesfully installed openmotif (libmotif3 through the synaptic package manager). I've downloaded and un-tarred the Citrix ICA client package,
en.linuxx86.tar.gz
, on my Desktop. When I run
sudo ./setupwfc
in terminal, i get the error message:
This package does not contain a Citrix Client for Unix for this workstation.
Now what? Thanks. JCR

Hi, I'm a long time follower of the quest for Ubuntu, big thanks to everyone who takes the time to share what they are doing on this.
After installing Intrepid, clean install on top of a clean and new latest Sugar, I'm having a problem getting connected. Has anyone else seen/solved anything like this?
I'm trying to connect with 128 bit WEP to a Linksys WRT54G and it keeps asking me for the passkey - which it already has. A popup comes up saying that passwords or encryption keys are required for the network. It has the passkey populated correctly, because I saved it, but when I click Connect, it tries and does the same thing.
I've closed NetworkManager and restarted with
sudo NetworkManager --no-daemon
to see the output.
This part I wondered, is it not getting the wep key?
NetworkManager: <info> Config: added 'wep_key0' value '<omitted>'
Code:
NetworkManager: <info> (eth0): device state change: 4 -> 5

Also when I finally cancel the popups, I get this

Points to the same thing?
But it DOES get the key in the NetworkManager interface, and I told it to always allow the applet access to the default keyring.
I may be totally misinterpreting these logs, any help gladly appreciated.

"not configured" where? You should see the respose to
ifconfig eth0
even if it's down. If you don't get a response to this, somethig must be terribly wrong, and you should reinstall the system (and update XO to 8.2.0 and firmware q2e18 if you haven't done so already).

What adapter, and what device name do you see in ifconfig output?

Hi Teapot,
Can I use the SD with intrepid XO on it on another XO as well.
If my understanding is correct, I just need to update the second OLPC XO to latest firmware and copy security folder from the second XO's Sugar on to SD card and reboot, irrespective of sugar version on second XO.
Is it correct. The problem my other XO is in India. If the steps work, then I can just post my current SD card and cut down instruction to my friend who is windows based.
Thanks a lot once again.

Usually it means that it's out of memory. You can try add swap space or at least exit from most memory-consuming applications if you didn't do that already.
Teapot, thanks, the swap space did the trick. The jre installed fine.
Now, on to the next problem if anyone can help. Skype. I can hear the lovely test voice girl, albeit a bit choppy she is, but I can't hear when I talk. I checked the list of links with the extra solutions, it says to enter alsa mixer -V all and make sure the v_refout (sp?) is inchecked for the mike. However, when I execute alsa mxer... in the terminal, I get a mesage /sbin/alsa [reload|unload|...etc ] message.
It won't start up...so what am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Lyle

Did you actually type "alsa mixer -V all" ? The correct command is
alsamixer -V all

I did type a space...that's what I saw in the discussion message...perhaps when I get home...I will leave out the space and see what happens!
Thanks mavrothal,

Thanks for all the work on getting Intrepid stuff working for the XO!
I used a Sandisk 4GB SDHC Class 2 card, and ended up with the following messages at boot time:
--------------------
SDHCI: Card didn't power up after 1 second
<buffer@ffb68e30>:18:
Can't open boot device
Type 'help' for more information
ok
------------------
HOWEVER, I figured out a workaround -- which is just to type the command "boot" at the ok prompt. That gets the system to use the SD card to boot up into Intrepid!
So, now I'm curious whether the line in the "olpc.fth" file which points the system to the olpc.fth file can be eliminated, because when you type "boot" the system just displays a line regarding the "olpcrd.img" file?
Thanks,
*Bradley

I can't seem to boot from the SDHC card. From Forth, I always get this:
Can't open disk label package
Then it proceeds to Sugar. I am guessing this is related to my card rather than the laptop itself (has dev key, disabled security). Anyone get the same result?

I came close to selling my OLPC but before doing so I checked for a Sugar upgrade - found OLPC release 8.2.0 and then came upon Teapot's Ubuntu Intrepid optimized for the XO and decided the OLPC was a keeper.
Thank you Teapot!!
Now as a Linux newbie a question if I may - I've set up Synergy to use my XP keyboard and mouse with the XO and XP machine - I run Synergy re-directed through ssh so the transmitted mouse and keyboard data is encrypted - at least I think it is.
Is there a relatively "easy" way I can check the actual data stream to ensure it is encrypted (creeping paranoia?). I had a look at ettercap and wireshark but both involve a learning curve - if there is no "easy" way to have a look at the data stream and one of these packages is the only way to go then can someone recommend which is the better choice or perhaps recommend another app.
Thanks.
Edit:
Found mention of top command in this thread - tried it - it seems to confirm ssh and Synergyc are working together as expected - they appear on the top list when their is mouse/keyboard activity and disappear off the list otherwise...
