Hi Teapot,

I had a quick question for you. I've been trying to build my own xubuntu image for the OLPC so that I understand how it's done. I've been following the instructions here:

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Ubuntu_On_OLPC_XO

I've bumped into a problem where synaptic can't find sysvinit in the xubuntu repositories. When I search for sysvinit apt-get tells me the package does not exist though other packages refer to it. Is there something I'm missing? Where did you install sysvinit from?
Which version is it? Both Hardy and Intrepid repositories have it (and it's also included in both tarballs).

Some files from iTunes are m4p, "DRM'ed" m4a files, so they are not supposed to play on anything but "authorized" devices.
All these years I thought that when you import from a CD to iTunes does not add DRM, since writing DRM files to CDs and re-importing is considered the simplest way to remove DRM. Apparently is not the case. iTunes does add DRM protection if you import from a commercial  CD Angry. You learn something every day... Indeed treating the files with known de-DRM processes makes them playable m4a.

This is what libxine1-ffmpeg is for. Have you restarted Amarok after installing it?
More than once. And Libxine1-ffmpeg was there.

Comcast residential does not provide a public IP address, so that apparently takes my home configuration out of the running.

So, this returns us to the Citrixvpn question.  Is this a place where I could run Wine on Ubuntu (yes, I caught your earlier comment about its general uselessness) for the purpose of using the XP Citrix vpn client on the XO to connect to my office network?

I suppose another answer could be an external vpn service like GoToMyPC to control my home computer, assuming GTMPC would run through the XO (now that I have JRE on it).

Thoughts?  Thanks, again.  JCR

Hi Teapot,

Thanks for your reply. I'm trying to set up Interpid Ibex (8.10). I'm not sure why I can't find it if it is in the repository. I've tried both the US and Canadian repositories - just in case there is a difference. I've used both the command line (apt-get) and synaptic to look for it.

Perhaps "sysvinit" is to simple a search? Do you have the full name of the package that needs to be installed.

I'll look for it in the tarballs and if nothing else I can install it from the deb package. I was afraid that if I did this however that I wouldn't get updates and security fixes for this package.

Hi there

I'm an XO newbee looking to install Ubuntu on the XO - your installation instructions look fairly straightforward, good job!!

Just a quick question on installing on an XO with an older Sugar build - I've currently got a 656 build on my XO (the newer firmwares kept freezing the machine & I had terrible network issues), will I have a problem trying to install??

Cheers

Yes. I recommend updating XO to 8.2.0 from a USB drive (full firmware+OS+activities installation) before doing anything else. Old firmware and kernel had a lot of problems.

It is the full name of the package.

See:

http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/intrepid/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz
(look for "Package: sysvinit" in that file)

Wine does not support messing with the network at that extent.

If you have Citrix VPN, maybe you also have Citrix ICA so you will be able to use remote desktop from XO? Or some other kind of VPN, or external ssh server?

It works on my laptop, so I have prepared a list of packages that contain libraries used by Amarok while playing MP3. If you run
Code:
dpkg-query -f '${package} ${status}\n' -W amarok amarok-engine-xine \
kdelibs4c2a libacl1 libart-2.0-2 libasound2 libattr1 libaudio2 libavcodec51 \
libavutil49 libc6 libcap1 libcomerr2 libcurl3-gnutls libdrm2 libexpat1 \
libfftw3-3 libflac8 libfontconfig1 libfreetype6 libgcc1 libgcrypt11 \
libgl1-mesa-glx libgnutls26 libgpg-error0 libgsm1 libice6 libidn11 libjpeg62 \
libkeyutils1 libkrb53 liblcms1 libldap-2.4-2 libmad0 libmng1 libmodplug0c2 \
libmusicbrainz4c2a libmysqlclient15off libnss-mdns libofa0 libogg0 libpcre3 \
libpng12-0 libpostproc51 libpq5 libpulse0 libqt3-mt libraw1394-8 libsasl2-2 \
libsm6 libsmbclient libspeex1 libsqlite3-0 libssl0.9.8 libstdc++6 libtag1c2a \

libxdamage1 libxdmcp6 libxext6 libxfixes3 libxft2 libxi6 libxine1-bin \
libxine1-ffmpeg libxine1-misc-plugins libxinerama1 libxrandr2 libxrender1 \
libxt6 libxxf86vm1 zlib1g | grep -v 'install ok installed'
it will return the list of packages that are not installed.

It's also possible that you have everything installed, plus gstreamer, and Amarok is configured to use gstreamer engine instead of xine.Settings -> Configure Amarok -> Engine should be set to xine, (and output on that configutation page to alsa).

I wish. Really.
Did I miss something? Is there some super-duper library/plugin/voodoo that can make it go over 1.5 fps, and play  flash games from "popular" sites in the browser?

Teapot

Thanks for your speedy reply.  Everything went swimmingly & I now have Ubuntu working well on my XO.  Many thanks for your idiot-proof guide (believe me, if I can get trhough it....)

One further question if I may - I tried to install Japanese support using the method outlined in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Japanese_Input_and_Fonts_in_Ubuntu_8.10_using_SCIM    I was OK until I had to "Go to System / Administration / Language Support and select Japanese"  I couldn't find 'Administration' under 'System', let alone the 'Language Support' option...  Am I missing something here?  Has the XO version been stripped own & taken away that option?

Also - do I have to do something to be able to watch youtube videos - the youtube page says I haven't got the latest version of flash, even though I've gone through the motions to do so.  Is this another XO related issue?

Many thanks in advance

Hi there Teapot...

I have to say I really appreciate your clear instructions, but there must be something that I must be missing.  First off, I have successfully installed the previous Ubuntu before (using compressed files)  and I followed your instructions to the letter, but when I reboot, it does not want to boot from the SD card... it gives me the error
     ext3 journal needs recovery
OS found - No signature for our key
I have tried it again and the same thing happens.  Do you have any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong? I'm installing on an 8GB SD card.

Thanks!

OK, Teapot, I tried an experiment.  I loaded up Wine (the latest Ubuntu 8.10 release) and then downloaded the Windows XP Citrix vpn client to see if I can install it.  Maybe you were wrong.

Not.  Oh, well. Back to the drawing board.

Since I have Wine, I did download and successfully install Winamp (the latest version -- 5.54, using classic skin).  I was then able to stream my music playlists from my home XP computer through orbnetworks to the emulated Windows Winamp on the XO.  However, the Winamp screen is tiny and it rolls around all over the screen whenever I touch the mouse.  Any way to enlarge and get it to stay in one place?  Also, the stream was pretty choppy and I am wondering if there is a way to improve on that?  Thanks.  JCR
