I got Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx to boot to console on the XO from nand. It's extremely slow to boot compared to earlier versions or any Debian flavor. I suspect it's something to do with plymouth.
Anyway, I wrote up instructions:
http://www.olpcnews.com/forum/index.php?topic=4766.msg32006#msg32006
Hello All,
Has any of you tried the installation of Ubuntu Lucid on XO described at URL
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Ubuntu_Lucid_on_OLPC_XO?
If you did, I would appreciate hearing about it. I installed on my desktop running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx the sofware VirtualBox and downloaded the ISO image mentioned in the above URL. I am yet to figure out how to use VirtualBox software to create the SD card with Lucid OS for the XO.
thanks,
Rao

used it 2 times (Ubuntu Netbook and Lubuntu) and the instructions are straight forward....
to create the the disk for VirutalBox just use the instructions given on that site:
$ cd ~/.VirtualBox/HardDisks
$ VBoxManage internalcommands createrawvmdk -filename olpc-xo.vmdk -rawdisk /dev/sdX -register
only thing that did not work so far is sound...

I am alive, and should be able to produce a usable 10.04.
So is Ubuntu-XO 10.04 still in the cards?...
I was considering messing with the
VM building method
this WE, but if your are still planning to produce one, I'd rather go to the beach

For those still enjoying Teapot's Hardy distro, but getting annoyed with the old Firefox 3.0.19 version, you can upgrade to the lastest firefox with a small Personal Package Archive update here:
http://www.webupd8.org/2010/01/firefox-36-stable-ubuntu-repository-ppa.html
This solved my problems with firefox hogging 100% CPU and leaking memory.

For anyone interested in tethering to an Android smartphone for mobile internet access, the instructions linked below worked just fine with my HTC Incredible:
http://www.linux-magazine.com/Online/Blogs/Productivity-Sauce-Dmitri-s-open-source-blend-of-productive-computing/Tether-an-Android-Phone-Using-Proxoid
I did get an error unpacking one file from the Android SDK, but you don't need that one for this to work.

"Kindle for PC" under WINE

Although the "Kindle for PC" software currently available from Amazon does not run under WINE, I just found out that the old "Kindle for PC BETA" software actually does. The BETA installer is still available from here:
http://d1xhj100piaj9u.cloudfront.net/25338/KindleForPC-installer.exe
Note that the characters on UI buttons and text-entry boxes will be invisible until you configure WINE to run the program in "Windows 98" mode.
Unfortunately, however, the BETA software doesn't seem to support the Full-Screen mode that the current release does, nor does it cope well with screen rotation; in portrait-mode, the maximize button does not expand the bottom of the window to fill the entire screen. You can manually drag the edges of the window around, but it's kind of a pain unless you've mastered using the trackpad sideways or have a USB mouse with you.
The available DRM-removal methods are Windows-specific, so you would need to exercise your legal fair-use rights on a different computer before you can load the files in FBReader or another reader of your choice, which is obviously not a very effective work-around.
Has anyone else tried Kindle software on the XO and gotten better results?

So was that a tease?
Stumbled on major issues?
More pressing matters appeared?
Anything?...

I followed your tutorial and everything has gone swimmingly. Ubuntu is up and running and I can install and use programs (FBReader!). That said, I am encountering problems installing wine. Installation fails with the following error:
wine_1.0.1-0ubuntu3-intrepid1_i386.deb: subprocess dpkg-deb --fsys-tarfile returned error exit status 2
Does anybody have any ideas on how to correct this? FYI, I am running ubuntu from a 4GB Sandisk SD card (my 2GB card would not work, for some reason).

More pressing matters :-((
Had to participate in major projects at work nearing release, barely had time to sleep, leave alone working on XO port. Made some progress, but it's still incomplete now.

Speep
(seriously!)
At this point you may want to wait for the 10.1.2 XO update (os850+) to go final so you can use the OLPC signed version to make this one also, bootable on locked machines

While on the road the other day I had the chance to appreciate once more teapot's Ubuntu that was the only one of my XO OSs to get me out of a tricky spot.
So I thought I update its aging geode driver with the considerably faster 2.11.9 version.
Took some time to find the required intrepid libraries for compiling it but after that was as simple as ./configure, make, strip
It is here:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/6yob21
Extract it and move the two files in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/ restart the xserver or reboot and you are good to go.
You may want to backup the original geode_drv.so and ztv_drv.so

If you don't mind, what is geode? (I gathered from googling that it is the AMD processor in XO-1. Is that right?).
I wonder if it is possible for you to do me (and may be others too) a big favor. Would it be possible for you to tar (with bzip) your Teapot (Ubuntu Intrepid) OS (of course without any of your personal information files) and place it somewhere (is space a problem?) so that I can download it and install on my XO-1? My SD card got damaged and with it I lost mine!
thanks,
Rao

...this reminds me that I
still
made no releases since 8.10.
I barely had time for anything but my work projects since August, but I should be able to update things with the current Ubuntu release.

Rao,
my Ubuntu is about 1GB compressed by now, so no point of posting it. Besides I believe that the original is still available, and a new one may come out soon as teapot says
Geode2.11.9 is the geode video driver that controls the XO display. Sorry for the cryptic lingo.
